I am sure this has been brought up, and I will get railed, but if you can forgive me for asking and are willing to share information....

I usually drink a whey protein (isolate) about 15 minutes before and after a workout. Honestly though, a protein drink before a workout makes my stomach a little upset, and always has, even when I was younger.

I am not a spring chicken, and no longer lift real heavy weight (yes, It WILL happen to all of you ), so I usually take small amounts - about 15g before and after...

What is the best time to take it around a workout? Should carbs be mixed? What kind of carbs? Is WPI bad for you?

Thanks in advance..

I usually do BCAAs before/during workout and then whey shake afterwards. But that's just me...

Same here. I drink Whey during or after my workouts.

BCAA's and whey are kind of pointless if you just a normal meal within a few hours of working out or a few hours after.

Nutrient timing has a marginal effect at best.

Sometimes I'll have a WPI shake before a workout, but I really prefer a good meal before lifting. I like a good WPI shake after a work out, though. I try to get it within 30 minutes of the end of the lifting, but that's not always possible, so I shoot for within an hour.

are you lactose intolerant?

Is that for me, regarding the upset stomach comment?

Not lactose intolerant that I know of. Drink milk and eat dairy all the time.

Usually the stomach upset is pre-workout. And it is minor. Maybe trying to throw down too much protein and water right before a workout.

Ya, just curious it was the whey in particular that was affecting your GI issues.

I've always been told way different. But then that is in junction with endurance training/work outs.

Nutrient timing is usually brought up in the context of WPI due to its extremely fast digestion. I guess the theory is it digests and assimilates so quickly that, unlike other foods, there is a "window" for maximum effectiveness. The question is when is that maximum effectiveness window, if such a thing exists...

The couple of studies I've seen (there may be more, I don't know) suggest that 30 minutes is ideal, up to an hour is good and with in two hours is suggested. However, those studies were for people using heavy resistance training, not endurance athletes, so I'm not sure if it applies to most of TexAgs.

Sort of related question...if you were going to have one serving of creatine a day, when would be the best time to do it? Before, during, or after a workout?

I asked that same thing a few days ago. I was told that it didnt matter. After a few days, you're just replenishing it. FWIW, I drink mine after.

Allow me to rephrase. For most purposes, this is true. And by most I mean 95% of the fitness population.

Nutrient timing is important if you are on a very synergetic resistance training/calorie partitioning. But in order for this to be relevant, the meals macronutrients have to be specifically designed to your bodies needs. Think of carbohydrate cycling.

Yeah phi, I and most people are "done" by the time any of that becomes a concern.

10-12% body fat is fine with me...
