Runners, who smoke . . . ?

Happened at a race earlier this month, finished the race, started cool down walk and suddenly got a snootful of smoke. Guy sitting on the ground, wearing a number, and smoking, near the finish line.

So, do you runners smoke, and if you do, do you smoke directly after running, and if so, WHY? Is it because you cannot go another second without a cigarette, or because you are passive-aggressive and just want to tick everyone else off, are are you suicidal and want to smoke a cigarette at the absolute worst time for your lungs, or do you somehow think that running the race cancels out the cancer stick? I am still shaking my head over this, and really wonder about it. Maybe he was not inhaling, just hoping the secondhand smoke kills all his competition . . .

Maybe he smokes and enjoys it after a race and really isn't all that worried about someone else getting upset about it?

A few of the guys on the hockey team (at least one posts here) would always go smoke a cigarrette right before game time. They said it opened up their lungs. I had no frame of reference to agree or disagree.

These guys didn't seem to have a problem with it.

Many eastern European/former Soviet Union + Greek and Turkish Olympic lifters chain smoke, maybe not year around but at least during a week leading to a competition. I do not remember the exact reason for it.

There are numerous stories of lifters taking frequent cigarette brakes during training. Just from a quick Internet search,

"[Turkish] lifters tend to take smoking breaks between the snatch and C&J."

"[Training in Turkey] is still heavy singles in the snatch, clean and jerk, and front squat multiple times per day with smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee, and playing chess in their free time."

"... Bulgarian Olympic lifters smoking cigarettes while doing box jumps."

I remember someone running that decided to light up a cigar to look cool. A few puffs in and he looked like he was going to throw up. At the finish line he was coughing and dry heaving for a half hour.

As a former smoker, I've never understood this either. I was a pretty heavy smoker but there was nothing I wanted less after a long bike ride or run than a cigarette. Usually because I spent the entire ride/run cussing myself for smoking.

Now, back in college we did smoke before and after intramural games, but we were also usually drunk as hell so I don't think it mattered much.

Sergey Zubov used to smoke a pack during the two intermissions of Stars games. That's a commitment to being a Russian.

I used to live on the White Rock course, before the half-marathoners turn (about mile 8.5) for home. It was great people watching. One year I saw a lady run to the end of my block, stop, pull out a cigarette, walk the block while she was smoking it, and then proceed to keep running.

It was impressive dedication to an addiction.
