Today I was going to buy some turkey franks but this time for some reason seeing MSM on the ingredients list made me feel ugh and I put them back. Do y'all avoid MSM? I prepare 90% of my food from scratch so just seeing the ingredients on foods I used to eat make me feel uncomfortable.

Mechanically separated meat (MSM), a product also known as mechanically recovered/reclaimed meat (MRM) or mechanically deboned meat (MDM), is a paste-like meat product produced by forcing beef, pork, turkey or chicken, under high pressure through a sieve or similar device to separate the bone from the edible meat tissue. For the production of chicken and turkey MSM, most of the time, breast carcasses are used as they still contain parts of breast meat.

Mechanically separated meat has been used in certain meat and meat products since the late 1960s. This product can be contrasted with meat extracted by advanced meat recovery systems. The most common use of MSM is into hot dogs.

I'd stick with pure beef franks.

Doesn't bother me. My thinking is the whole "everything in moderation".

I'm all about not wasting food. Mechanically separate away!

is this the same thing as that article that came out showing the pink chicken of fast food places?

I try to stay away from processed foods in general.

Usually the only 'prepared' foods I buy are spaghetti sauce, yogurt, bread/tortillas, salsa & bbq sauces. Beer & wine of course too.

Just remember, it's not the mechanical separation that makes the food 'bad' for you, it's the extra ingredients that some manufacturers put in the final product..

Come on Max, salsa is easy! And way cheaper too.

The problem is I hardly ever eat salsa, and it's just me at the house. I don't think I can make a small batch of salsa, it just happens to always be a lot. It's just me at the house, so it ends up going bad/I get tired of it before it's gone.

Having seen the mechanical deboning process in person, I'm not a big fan. I love me some meat, just not a big fan of the mushed up stuff.
