How long do you want to ignore this user?
Guys,

My MaxOT workout plan is calling for "behind-the-back cable pushdowns. I've looked all over Youtube and the web and I cannot find a demonstration of this exercise.

I do understand what a cable press down is, but behind the back? Any help is appreciated.

sounds like a trick -- theyre trying to see who can benevolently be "that guy"

I'm no expert but it sounds to me like a type of triceps press?

Sounds like a motion similar to doing dips.

Pretty sure it hits the third head hard.

Somehow, I think this is a start...

Funny, but there are some people out there on the interweb that mention this exercise, so I'm sure someone understands how to do it. I just can find any pictures of it, nor can I fathom how this would be done.

The motion is like doing dips on a bench (or between two benches). I bet they are talking about using a short straight bar and pushing down behind the back.

You probably would have to have help to get the bar down. I agree that they are trying to get you to look like "that guy".

There are plenty of triceps exercises to do without going through this much trouble.

I think that sounds like an outstanding way to strain your rotator cuff, a la behind the head lat pulls. I would seriously look for something else that won't impinge your shoulders.

My thoughts exactly.

It's an isolation exercise and it works well. It's essentially the same exercise as a bench dip, only instead of using your bodyweight, you are using the cable pressdown machine. Just use a bar that allows you to get a wider grip, obviously you're not going to be able to us a narrow one.

sounds pretty silly, and there are alot better (safer) exercises to do than one so ackward

Why not just do bench dips or regular dips?

Because he's doing Max OT, and it's premise is built on lifting very heavy weight. Hard to do with a bench dip.

but easy to do with behind the back pushdowns?

It's pretty easy to add weight with dips. Most gyms have belts made just for this reason. I'm just thinking it would be awfully hard to get the bar into a good position to push down on when it's behind your back (assuming you're using some sort of push down machine/pulley). Add to that the risk of injury and I think dips would be a good substitute that is safer and just as effective (if not more so). Just my opinion though.

How are you going to add weight to a bench dip with a belt? You are already low to the ground, and at the bottom of the move you are pretty much inches from the ground.

The move is supposed to be done with a spotter btw.

I was talking about regular dips. The only way I can see adding weight to bench dips is by putting plates in your lap.

Regular Dips emphasize your chest. Bench or chair dips emphasize the triceps.
