I really like my tahoe, I got a 2007 LS, with no third row seat. It comfortably seats 5 with a large trunk due to the removal of the third row seat. I get about 16 mpg average, even though "expected" is 16-21. I'm not sure how much the 4Runner costs, but I went with the base package on the Tahoe, no leather, no bucket seats, no navigation/dvd player, but still very nice inside and very comfortable. With Tax, Title and License i was out the door at 33,500.

Isn't the Sequoia the comparable Toyota to the Tahoe?

dleonard's got a good point. They're two different sized vehicles.

My friends 4x4 V8 4Runner is very, very nice. The Tahoe is a larger vehicle, but to the Tahoe's credit, the gas mileage is pretty similar.

You did not get a good deal on the 07 Tahoe LS... I came close to getting a LT2 with leather ..etc everything but Nav for 32,500, but not happy with gas mileage....so NO.

I got my LT2 Tahoe for 32.6k before TT&L. It comes with leather and the rear parking assist, and of course the 5.3L V8 with the Active Fuel Mgmt system.

I've only driven 150 miles in it, and I know to expect the gas mileage to be the worst for the first 500 miles or so.

My sister has a 2006 4Runner with a V6 and leather; the mileage, disappointingly, isn't ALL THAT much better than my brand new, unbroken-in Tahoe. It didn't really cost all that much less either. Basically, for a little bit more money, I can get a bigger unit for similar mileage and more power.

See if you can get a GMS coupon and buy your Tahoe with it. You'll get it for significantly less than invoice price (you can also keep rebates).

we own both, and much prefer the 02 Tahoe over the 01 4Runner.

4Runner transmission crapped out on us at 52k.

Tahoe lost a fuel pump (very common until the 2005+ models)

4Runner gets 18 w/ the V6. Tahoe gets 16 w/ the V8.

I have an 06 4runner with the third row and a V6. My wife drives it and gets 22-24 miles on the highway, and 18-20 in the city. The third row is worthless for adults, but works nice for kids and car seats. It is very comfortable and fun to drive. I have been happy with it.

Never had a 4-runner but I've been quite pleased with my Tahoe. I've logged 11,500 miles since November 13th when I bought it for $40,875 out the door. It has all the options available except for sunroof, nav, dvd and rear camera since I didn't want any of that.
07 LT3 4X4, leather, 20s, Bose sound system, power liftgate, lock diff, FlexFuel ( I'm sure I'll never put E85 in it. ) Also negotiated the 1st year of scheduled maintenance free into the deal. Allen Samuels ( Houston ) sales office was fairly decent to deal with but their service department has been great!
If anyone has gotten a better deal let me know but I think I did all right for my first new car purchase. I'm sure the rebates then aren't the same as they are now too.

Purchased a full warranty to extend to 100K miles.

Probs so far include a fuel pump relay which was sticking and draining the battery. That fuel pump runs very quietly cause I never heard it running from outside the vehicle. Warranty took care of it.
Also, there are way too many buttons/adjustments you can make on this truck but fortunately there are failsafes on everything so you can't really screw it up too much if you get switch happy.

Mileage in city is consistently 16mpg.

Active Fuel Management seems to be a joke as it's only engaged at 4 cyl while coasting downhill with a tailwind.

Impossible Toyotas are flawless in every way, and never crap out before 500000 miles.

I've heard lots of transmission probs from Toyotas lately, esp the new Camry.

I drive the Sequoia and love it (used to drive a 4-Runner).

My wife drives the Tahoe, and loves it.

The only car I will not buy again is a FORD. I've simply had too many poor experiences with their vehicles.

To each his own. Drive them both and see what you think.

My apologies, I should have probably explained this before I wrote it. My Cousin has a 1 or 2-year-old son and is expecting. As of now, she has a 2007 Honda Civic, but with another baby on the way she wants to buy something. She was toying with the idea of 4-Runner or Tahoe, I thought of the apples to oranges comparison problem too. But I thought I would come and see what TexAgs thought. She wants something that's reliable and safe (obviously). Gas probably isn't a problem because I don't know that she ever really goes very far in the first place.

Anyone have any other suggestions??

In the non-full size class:

Honda Pilot
Nissan Pathfinder
Toyota Highlander
Ford Edge
Lincoln MKX
GMC Acadia (and the Saturn equivalent)

I think the Highlander is a bit small and expensive. No A/C to the rear. CR loves it but I don't. We own a 2006 Pilot EX-L and it is a very good anti-van.

I wouldn't buy the 4Runner unless you really need offroad capability. The others ride smoother and are a bit more practical.

If gas isn't an issue, then the Tahoe is a no-brainer. Gas in the 4Runner isn't that much better, even with the V6. The safety features are very well executed by GM, and it's front-crash rating is 5 star. It also comes standard with the stabilitrak anti-rollover and anti-slip technology with traction control. It also have much more space than the 4Runner, especially for child seats.

Spice,

wouldn't you say the Acadia is a bit bigger than those other, even if it's not technically a full size?

I think anyone with 2 kids looking for an SUV/CUV must take a look at the Acadia and Mazda CX-9.
SpicewoodAg

I haven't been in an Acadia - so am relying on what I've read. But it is probably roomier than a 4Runner but less than a Tahoe. I think the Pilot is larger inside than a 4Runner.

I agree with the CX-9 suggestion. It has much in common with the Edge but is a 3 row.

The Acadia isn't all that much less than a Tahoe or Yukon....

How long do you want to ignore this user?
it's not much cheaper no, but the gas mileage is a fraction better, and some people just don't like driving something that big.

Acadia is much lower to the ground, more like a minivan. It probably drives better than the Tahoe. I would certainly look at them for my/wife's next vehicle.

I think their 3rd row is a lie flat also, which is really nice.

my brother has an acadia and they love it. definitely built to be a minivan with SUV looks. aside from a full sized truck based SUV, you won't find a roomier/more functional 3rd row. very well designed layout, and you can get captains chair in the 2nd row.

I'll second the CX-9 suggestion. We love ours.
