What's the power like in one of these cars? Decent 'get up and go' for a 4 cylinder?

158 HP.

Not too bad, but the 4 banger in the Accords a a little more powerful and a little quicker.

Camry I4 is fine about 90% of the time, about 10% of the time you wish it had more power. More if you like to put your foot down.

The car itself is fairly quiet, smooth riding, and a good freeway cruiser. Its not called 'vanilla' for no reason however.

What is this "V4" you speak of?

There have been a few v4's made in the past (by VW I think), but none are made now...

We bought a V6 accord for the price of a 4 banger camry. JustFYI.

I bought a V6 Sonata with ~240 HP loaded with everything for <$20k so I would look at those before you look at Camry or Accord.

Although, those are obviously both great cars as well.

I can understand peoples' weariness of the Huyndai, but anyone looking at accord or camry should at least consider one. good looking car IMO. the only question is does the high resale value of toyota and honda offset the higher inital investment.

I actually saw a nice looking Sonota today, a black one with dark windows and nice wheels. It's not a bad looking car. This vehicle will be for my soon to be wife, and will be with her for the next decade. So, I'm 95% sure it will be a Camry, because that is what she wants, and that is what she has always driven.

Techsan - No offense, but your wife has always driven a Camry and that's what her heart is set on AGAIN? Ugh.

There are 50 cars in that class to choose from and many so much more interesting and fun to drive.

I'm sure your wife is a terrific person but man, she could broaden her outlook on cars just a bit!

indeed. I would challenge her to at least drive a few other cars. she may find she still prefers a camry, or she might not. the worst that could happen is that she makes a more informed choice.

If you plan on trading in or selling in 3 years this is probably true...for now. However, I drive cars until they crater so resale value is frankly not a consideration for me when buying cars.

I think you will see the Hyundai quickly close the gap with Honda and Toyota as far as resale value though.

The original poster said this car will be with his wife-to-be for the next decade. Resale value won't be very important.

It seems likely that in 6-10 years fuel efficient cars will be worth more than guzzlers.

Techsan_02:

I own one and I would consider the 'get up and go' okay at best. I didn't buy it for the 'get up an go' though. I bought it for reliabilty, comfort, and good fuel economy for my long commute to work. I also found out today that they are probably pretty safe because a Papa John's driver rear-ended me at a pretty high speed and the car handled the collision very well. I'm now praying the car is totaled.

If you are concerned about 'get up and go' I would look elsewhere.

You should also check out the Aura. 224HP 3.5L or 252HP 3.6L. I think it looks better than the Accord and Camry as well. You can get the 3.5 for a little over 20 grand, or the 3.6 (with a lot more options standard) for just under 25K I think. It also comes with a 10 yr 100000 mile warranty.

Just a note, the Pontiac G6 is the same car, but I much prefer the styling of the Aura to the G6 (unless its the hardtop convertible)

I like the loaded Sonata option for the money.

the Aura and G6 are not the same. the Aura is based on the Opel Astra from europe. the G6 is based on a Holden from australia.

If she likes the Camry, and will be happy with the Camry, why force her to look around.

Get her what she wants, and keep it simple.
SpicewoodAg

aggrad99 - of course you're right.

But what if she doesn't know there are nicer, more interesting cars out there because she has never looked?

I just want fewer Camrys or other bland-mobiles driving slow in the left lane.

because she could be happier in another car, that's why. the worst that could happen is she decides she still wants the camry.

as a married man....I'm here to tell you, that is definately not the worst that could happen.

She could be torn forever on which car she wants, finally decide, and then lament that she should have gotten the other one instead.

She also could fall in love with options on another car, that ups the price considerably.

Keep it simple with women.......

Maybe she'll look for other options, like a new husband!

My wife deserves just about any car she wants - she is inherently reasonable.

If you want a 4cyl get a Honda. No one does them better. No one squeezes more of both HP and MPG out of a naturally aspirated cubic inch of displacement than Honda. They have the combination of power and efficiency thing down like no one else.

TGTCT - I agree with your comments about 4 cylinder engines. I haven't been in a car with a 4 cylinder better than Honda.

There are many good V6s and a really good I6 (BMW). But Honda 4s are smoother, rev better, etc. Their really good ones, like the S2000, or the smaller Acura models, are impressive.

It sounds like his wife wants a camry......

I have an 07 Camry SE w/ the V6, and I like it a lot. I've driven the 4cyl and didn't like it. The 4cyl wasn't horrible, but there just wasn't enough power for my preferences. I wasn't in love with the way most of the Camrys felt, but the SE's stiffer suspension made that a bit better IMO. I drive fairly conservatively most of the time, but I am very glad I have the 268hp when I need/want to step on it. I would not have bought a Camry if I had to get the 4cyl.
