General question. I'm looking at getting a used Tahoe and I am curious how many miles I can expect to get on the engine total. Any information or helpful websites would be appreciated.

The vortec is an improved version of the old Chevys. I routinely got 180,000+ on the old 350s in rough farm service.

We presently have an LT-1 in a Caprice with 188,000 miles. Still going strong, but you can tell the valves are a little bad.

engine will be the least of your concerns

Engine will outlast everything if you take care of it...Its stuff like the tranny, and A/C you might have problems with.

I've got 120k on a 350 right now with no trouble and nothing but routine maintenance.

It aint the engine you should be worried about. It's everything else on that POS.

Wow. Why all the hate for the Tahoe?

I don't hate the Tahoe. I own one. I've had a couple minor issues.

The engine is bullit proof (I have the 5.3). I'd expect you to have issues with fuel pump, tranny, and A/C long before the engine.

I don't hate the Tahoe, I just know the engine would outlast everything else on the truck. Chevy makes rock solid engines for their trucks.

I have a 2003 top-of-the-line Tahoe that I bought new for $12k off of the sticker (Nov 2003). I thought I was getting a great deal. So far, the electric seat, AC, stereo, and battery have given out. The engine hopefully will continue to do well. Also, the leather seats are the CHEAPEST leather I have ever seen. I will never again buy another Tahoe, instead I will stick with Toyota and Honda. We bought a Pilot at the same time, and have had ZERO problems.

Lets see. My '96 silverado @ 150,000 before I sold it 2 years ago : A/C compressor, 2 water pumps, intake manifold gasket, radiator, Rear end, alternator, starter, 2 Fuel Pumps, not to mention all the minor parts replaced. Basically the only thing I didn't replace was the engine and the tranny(which was slipping before I sold it). Like other said, the engine is the least of your concerns when buying a Chevy/GMC.

My Tahoe needed coil replaced twice under warranty. AC compressor blew..under warranty. CD player would eat the CDs. Speakers blew. Automatic Seat gear broke out of warranty. The seat never needed adjusting because I was the only one driving. Couldn't replace the broken gear..rather had to replace the seat at 500 bucks. Rear hatch latch broke..under warranty. The carpet tore easily. Had it for 4 years and 70,000 miles. It's a POS. Bought it for 30,000 and sold it for 15,500. The day I sold it, the battery died so I had to give the guy 50 bucks so he can get a new battery.

Engine and the tranny were the least of my worries.

I love all of the flag waivers for the 350. The post did say something about the 4.8L, not the 350. Talk about two different generations of engines! No relevance whatsoever.

Q: You know why there are so many parts out there for the 350?

A: Because they break so often.

I disagree. The small block Chevy has been in evolution since 1955. The vortec heads were originally installed on the old 350 truck line, then moved over to the LT1 when it was discovered how good they were. The 4.8 and 5.3 are just further evolutions, though they were developed out of the LS1 line.
