I saw the other thread about the engine light, but I decided to start my own since it is a different make and model. I'm sitting at about 58,000 miles and my light came on and went off a couple of times over the last month and has now stayed on for a quite some time. The truck has trouble accelerating sometimes. My assumption is that an O2 sensor is bad. I will take it and have the computer hooked up to it tomorrow. Any thoughts before then?

the first time it happened to me, they said it was the O2 sensor....

since then, I have heard that topping off your gas tank can trigger it...

oh, and disconnecting the battery cables for a little while will reset the warning light

When you get your codes, write them down and google them to find out what others have done to correct the problem. You may also want to google your truck and "check engine light" or somesuch to see if there is a way to get the codes without going to the parts store. For instance on a 97 Jeep, you can turn the ignition on and off 4 times and the codes will display in the odometer.

that model year has issues with a DPFE sensor. they are very easy to replace.

i don't know if it is still active but i think there is a silent recall on them.

pretty sure autozone will give you a free scan. go there first.

my o2 sensors went out right around 90K miles and that was the only time the light went on.

Okay well I went to Auto zone and got the codes. It turned out to be the MAF sensor. I cleaned it and all is good now.

I had a 97 f-150 I bought new that drove me crazy with check engine light going on and off.

Finally found the problem a year later. The o-ring on the gas cap was bad.

Didn't know that. Took it down and they plugged it in and found a bad EGR valve (or maybe it is clogged... I'll know tomorrow).

Thanks drey00!

Replaced my EGR valve today. Disconnected the battery to clear the "check engine" light.

Problem solved! After 2 years!

Autozone will check the computer for free, but they do not carry Motorcraft EGR valves (Ford F150), so I went somewhere else.
