Lately my gas gauge has been suddenly dropping to Empty and the Low Fule light on the dash will come on. It will stay like that for a minute or two and then turn off and show the "correct" fuel level. Any ideas of what is causing this?

could be a fuel tank sensor going bad

That's what I am afraid of. I guess I will have to see how much it is going to be to repair.

Why repair it? Just use your trip to watch your mileage. Fill up between 300-350 miles.

I have the same problem with my audi. it's common enough that people have written about how to fix it on the audi A4.

for us the problem is a bad(dirty) connection to the sending unit located in the gas tank. to fix it you have to access the gas tank through the trunk.

Sending unit going out on those trucks is a common issue. Not too hard to do it yourself. RUn it low and drop the tank. The sending unit and fuel pump are serivvced together in most cases. How many miles are on it?

I had a '98 with the same issue. Have an '01 with the same issue. Mine jumps back and forth for about 70-100 miles and then works fine.

I priced the '98 to fix and it was around $400 because the sending unit for the gauge is part of the fuel pump, I believe. Never priced the '01 as I'm assuimg it's the same.

I just use the trip meter to make sure it's not off, but it's pretty consistent from 3/4 tank down.

I read on a truck forum that Chevy was supposed to recall that in October, but haven't seen it. GM probably realized it would just accelerate them to bankruptcy.

That was my experience as well in my 2000 model. You have to replace the fuel pump as well. Not worth it.

Sometimes kicking the truck in neutral whil will make the reading come back to its correct position. This works in my '00.
