'21 Ram HO/Aisin.

How much should a Hamilton tappet conversion cost? What about the Fleece grid heater replacement? At what point are these items worth the money versus playing the odds of a break down?

I plan on doing both of these once I'm out of my bumper to bumper warranty, but I've got another 80k miles to go before then.

That being said, there's lots of trucks with lots of miles out there that have zero issues.

I have a 21 HO 3500 with 85k miles. Can someone please educate me on these issues?

Thanks in adavance

Grid heater has a bolt that can work loose or shear over time from vibration and drop into the #6 cylinder or turbo and destroy everything.

In 2019, Cummins/Ram switched to hydraulic roller cam style in lieu of the proven flat tappet cam style (used from 1989-2018) to help quiet the engine. Rollers can be good, as most modern vehicles use them, but they aren't bulletproof like a flat tappet is.

Had one shop quote me $10-12k for the Hamilton and $2700 for the Fleece. A different guy told me $6-8K this morning, and that if you did both at same time the Fleece is just cost of parts extra.

Hard to justify a third of the price of an engine for something that might not happen.

Banks has the fix for the heater grid for $750 and an hour's worth of wrenching in your driveway. Did this for my 2019. Have not worried about the lifters.

Had the Hamilton cam and banks done on my 2019. Lifters had failed so I had the typewriter tic. Cost was about $8000. I didn't care for it as the valve train was very noisy. Had a second shop adjust valve lash and it was right on. It did have 6000 idle hours when I had it done

Dang it Texags. I ordered the monster-ram, plus the ram air, plus the boost tube kit.

Texags turned me not even knowing there might be an issue into spending $1500+

Thanks for letting me see your truck and helping to force me to pull the trigger on buying mine back in the day. Mechanic at daycare said he typically starts seeing ticking issues at 80k miles.

If not for the electrical issues you could just upgrade to the ZF instead.

So if there is an audible ticking and your engine fits the year and mileage, is it likely to be this tappet issue? What else could be making this ticking noise?

It's intermittent ticking, like a typewriter. Or sounds like a dust shield tapping on the motor. 19s through 24s. Not sure how the 25+ is holding up
