There is a $10,000 difference between what they offered me and what they are selling my exact car for with the same features, condition, and mileage. Does that sound right? I know they need to make a profit, but they are listing it for double what they would give me.

On a related note, does anyone have recommendations for privately selling your car easy in the Houston area?

I sold three vehicles in the last few years to private parties here on Texags to other Ags. All were very easy transactions, I made a lot more than going to a dealer and they got good deals on good vehicles. Win win.


Eliminated all the normal crap of private party selling.

10k doesn't sound unreasonable to me. You're taking a loss for it being easy and quick, in my opinion. I don't think carmax is just a car flipper. So, they do stuff to improve odds of quick sale and they have a lot of overhead.

I think you'll always come out ahead on private sale. You could put it on Texags Classifieds. Or Facebook marketplace but that may be a hassle.

If it isn't a car they are seeking, they will allow a large margin. Or if your car has title, Carfax, cosmetic, or mechanical problems.

If you get what you want for it, why does their selling price matter to you?

I listed a vehicle for sell trying to go private route. Dealt with a lot of back outs and low ball offers.

Put it to carmax to see what they would pay and they offered me slightly more than what I listed.

And it took less than 30 minutes when I arrived to bring out the door.

Maybe even less it was 4-5 years ago

Same. After 2 weeks being listed, they dropped the price to exactly what they paid me.
