I have a 2017 F150 3.5 Ecoboost. Is this the dreaded cam phaser issue? If so, anyone have any insight? Should I get it repaired ASAP? No check engine light or performance issues yet. Dealership or independent shop? What am I looking at for repair costs and time? Comes at a pretty poor time but trying to remain hopeful/positive.

Thanks for any help y'all can provide!

Hopefully that video works... On mobile right now...

Mine sounded a little bit different, but close. 99% of the time I remote start my truck in the morning before going to work(or leaving for the day) and before leaving work at the end of the day. So I'm not sure how long it had been doing this before I noticed the cam phaser rattle. From my understanding cold starts aka sitting for a long period of time before starting Is when this is most common. My truck was still under warranty so I had a dealership fix it. It was around 3k I believe without warranty coverage. I did quite a bit of googling and although everyone said to get it fixed I couldn't find anything that said what damage it does or could do if you don't fix it. I got it fixed about 6 months after noticing it.

That's a bit louder and rattlier than my 2018 when it happened to me but I gotta imagine it's the same issue. I've had to have mine replaced twice -luckily both under warranty. Was in the shop for a week each time. As far as cost sorry I can't be too helpful there

My 2018 3.5 rattle sounded a little different but similar. $3800 out of pocket to fix with the redesigned cam phasers.

Thanks all for the insight/commiseration. I've called a few local shops and the Ford dealership, all gave me the "Hard to tell until we tear it apart" on the guess-timate. Crazy it can be such a common issue and Ford won't make it right. But perhaps they won't make it right BECAUSE it is such a common issue. Would cost them a fortune.

Mine sounded worse than that but it's most likely it. Don't worry the 10 speed transmission will give out next.

That video sounds like an 8N tractor with a bad muffler.

Sounds like it

My advice if you fix it is to get rid of the truck because I have seen it repaired and it eventually comes back again on a lot of cases

My 2013 has this issue, and I've driven it another 50kish more miles after I first heard it. Don't recommend doing that but that's my anecdotal story.
