Live out of state, but Daughter will be going to A&M next year. Looking at car insurance options and curious what most people pay for teenager (18) in Texas.

- Good Student
- No Citations or Accidents

Can anyone tell me how much the pay (ballpark) for car insurance in TX for adding a teenager in similar scenario?

I obviously need to shop this but I just added our 16YO daughter to drive our 10 year old Tundra and it added exactly 3k per 6 months!

I have 3 boy drivers (1 totaled vehicle + 2 additional fender benders) and about to add a 4th boy. Whatever yours is, just be thankful.

I empathize.

We had 6 wrecks and 4 vehicles totaled in 20 months. (Not all our fault)

My insurance premium was a mortgage payment for a while.

From what carrier? I have three teenage drivers - $200-250/month per driver is more what I see.

I know the cost of vehicle they are driving is a big factor. I appreciate the feedback on the thread.

I pay $2500 annually for my wife and I. About to add our son and my agent said a safe bet is to double the cost.

Look to add discounts around grades and have them take defensive driving too for a discount (if it can apply).

This is about right. Wife and I were $2-3k / year and then went to about $8k with two teens and $10k with three teens.

Used to be in the business working for Liberty Biberty 50 plus years ago so it's changed a lot I imagine. But boys under 21 with their own car had the highest rates out there, If they were "occasional" drivers of the family car it was about half. Girls were less than boys. Buying a boy under 21 a car of his own is expensive. Check with your agent and see what the difference would be between him being the principal driver of his own vehicle or an occasional driver of yours. If there are 3 cars and 3 drivers it won't work........if you absolutely want him to have his own buy him a beater that doesn't need comp and collision.

We have multiple insurance policies. All of our cars that are newer and nicer that our teenager doesn't drive is on one policy, which he is excluded from.

We have a separate policy that my wife and I are insured on, and the teenager is added as a driver, for his vehicle.

This makes it much more cost-effective, and was actually suggested by our insurance agent.

I'm with State Farm. Adding my son raised monthly price by about $90. I was surprised.

I have State Farm and my son was consistently about 1.5 to 1.6x my own monthly premium. He drives a 2017 Infiniti wagon.

All in, our yearly premium for two cars (no accidents or tickets) has fluctuated from about $3500-$4k, with about $1500 of that being for me.

Now that he is 21, I am getting some relief. His premium has come down to about $1000/6 months (mine has stayed constant at $700-$750 for the better part of 12 years).

I did raise his collision deductible to $2k a while back (mine is $500), but it honestly didn't save very much.

Mine always drove a beater and it was understood that if he wreck it he would buy the next one. He made it through High School in a 2002 Honda Civic. We live in a rural area, 25 miles to school so he got lots of miles with not much traffic. The Honda bit the dust in College Station but he had been gifted a Caddie SRX from a Great Aunt who passed and it had lots of issues from sitting around, but it made it through A&M.

His insurance was never more than one of the cars that had full coverage, I think that was about $150 a month.

We did the same thing for a while.

Find a carrier that lets you exclude drivers. Some wouldn't allow it, but we found a couple who did.

But if you exclude them from a policy covering your car...do not let them drive it. Or you're on the hook.

We owned nice cars and were paying $750 a month to insure 4 cars with 2 female teenage drivers. These rates were from 10 years ago.

My oldest daughter was in 3 wrecks in College Station, 2 were not her fault. Totaled 2 vehicles.

Youngest daughter was in 2 wrecks, both fender benders, not her fault. College Station driving is intense and getting worse everyday.

Do the rates jump when the kids turn 16, or do they have to have a license? Twin girls that'll be 16 in August, they have no interest in driving....yet...

Rates only increase once they get a license. Learners permit also does not trigger cost increase.

More specifically, it only affects your insurance if you add them to the policy as a covered driver.

How do you like your Atlas?

Its decent. I've only ever owned trucks. Sedan was too low/small for my comfort. I drive 20 miles one way in Houston commute. Some of it highway and the rest stop n go. So we planned and got F150 to end up giving to son and it SHOULD last him until he's on his own.
Now I know when he leaves I'm getting a truck again to tow our boat so this next car is a short term deal about 2.5 years. I wanted something with a little better fuel efficiency, not low like a sedan, and medium sized, comfortable, and not a crazy price.
We test drove a bunch of new and used stuff and it came down to mazda cx90 and the Atlas. I liked the Atlas interior better. So far its been a good ride but only had a few months. A few minor tech things that bug me. It appeared thats one way they try to get you to upgrade. For example, there aren't any immediate controls for A/C. I have to touch the screen to get to the A/C part...then tap to make changes. In our other cars they are all right there so you can change settings super quick.
Also something as simple as a button for phone on the steering wheel. Instead of quick button push I gotta tap screen a couple of times.

A friend of mine has one from the first year the model came out. Drove it for several years and then passed it on to one of his kids once he graduated high school. The earlier models were apparently very low tech and had buttons and dials for the most important things- AC/Heat, radio, etc. I hate to hear VW moved away from that with the Atlas. I had been thinking about getting one.

I'd shop that policy or check your deductibles. We have three teens (all boys) and 5 vehicles (4 of which are pretty new) and we're at about $10k with Progressive.

Alot depends on where you live. Unless it's changed since I got out of the business, Houston and Harris county had the highest rates in the state no matter the age or gender of the driver. DFW area wasn't far behind. Rural counties were some of the cheapest.

I live in Lake Jackson and have an insurance agency. Our zip code is 77566. When someone calls in to make a change of address their premium goes up 100% of the time. We have absolutely the best zip code in the state in my experience. Even moreso than zips way out in the county.

A modern personal auto quote in Texas can easily involve 100300+ individual rating variables, depending on the carrier - some companies probably use even more.

It's way more than:
  • age
  • tickets
  • vehicle
  • ZIP code
Those are just the obvious ones.
