Hello auto board friends!

So I got a message on instagram earlier this week asking if I still had the original key fobs to my husband's wrecked gmc. And if I did have them, would I be willing to sell them and mail them to this person.

I have one key fob that I found in the junk drawer, no idea where the other is.


Question: how much do I charge him? $30 and the cost of mailing it?


I looked the person up on Facebook and asked some questions about the truck, so pretty sure it isn't a scam.

Key fob replacements at dealers run a few hundred dollars. If you know a guy who does work on the side it's still -$150

I'd say $30 is a generous. I'd up the price.

I need a new one for my sons car, and it's going to cost me $285, at minimum (best price I've found).

I'd at least ask $100 each, if not $150, and he's still getting a deal.

Had one of the ladies drop hers in a drain at our restaurant. Cost her $600 to get a new one. Nissans are apparently even more expensive than most.

Mazda fob with rear hatch opener = $370, includes rekeying door key

Program fob only = $125

I'm pretty sure you can buy aftermarket knock offs and get them reprogrammed at a lock smith for about half of what the dealer charges. But still way more than $30

Just replaced a fob on my 4Runner. It was $400 out the door.

Yep, I found a Nissan one in the parking lot at Helberg BBQ in Waco and turned it in.

One of the guys at the counter commented about how much a replacement would cost and I thought he was exaggerating. Hopefully the Nissan owner got reunited with their key fob.

Ace hardware does them. At least $150 from them. Did some for a used jeep I bought.

$150 is crazy. You can buy keyfobs for $40 on Amazon. Leave your GMC in the back of a Kroger parking lot after 11pm and you'll be approached by multiple people who would gladly program it for a nominal fee.

You still have to get those professionally programmed.

A poster on the GB needed a couple of Toyota key fobs for something. They were for my 2000 Tundra and have they key built in. I think he just wanted the guts from the fob.

I just mailed them to him. No big deal.

GMCs are some of the most stolen vehicles in America. It's nearly as easy to reporgram their current key fobs as it is to steal a KIA.
