Do you trust full synthetic oil and filter that claim 20k?

Now I have been going 10k on all my vehicles. One has over 120k miles and never a single issue.

You could do the Blackstone oil analysis and find out the appropriate interval.

The 3k oil change idea was created by service companies and had little-to-no basis in the characteristics of oil, made more obvious by adding "or 3 months".

10k for synthetic oil was reasonable 20 years ago before different cleaners, etc were added. It's 100% safe to set an alarm for 10k miles, then visually inspect the oil for deterioration. If it's jet black and sludge, change away, but it probably won't be.

I just use 20k oil and change every 5k miles. Easy peasy.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

The numbers don't lie. I've done it before too. They seemed pretty good with a 5k interval for the Tacoma.

I use Kirkland oil and factory filters on 5k intervals

I would never go longer than the vehicle manufacturer recommends regardless of what the oil manufacturer claims. Don't majority go 10k or less? And even that depends.

But especially with the AFM stuff and cam phaser stuff that you see on modern engines, I'm replacing more frequently than that. Usually 5k.

Oil is cheap. Engines are not.

I usually do change around 8K, if I remember.

Long ago I settled on 7500 intervals. From the research I did at the time, I was more concerned about the filter's life than the oil (always full syn). My usual filter is Purolator Pure1.

I've had four 300,000 mile engines on 10k oil changes. I guess that would say you can probably go longer. 10k makes it easy to remember.

My V10 Ford died a couple weeks ago with 335k. Engine spit out a spark plug. I'm not going to fix it.

Why not do 0w8 and 60k mile oil changes?

I don't change my oil. It has a slow leak so I just add more every couple of weeks.

It's probably overkill, but I change mine every 5k.

3.5, Gen 1 Boost.

I have had zero issues with cam phasors or turbos so far at nearly 168k miles.

One person above recommended going longer, but I can tell you, even at 5k miles, the oil smells pretty burnt thanks to those turbos. I'm not going any further than 5k. My wife's Exploder has the same engine (Gen 2, I think) and I do the same interval. No problems there either.

No damn way I'd ever go over 5k oil change interval with an Ecoboost.

I think a lot of variables need to be considered. 20k of highway driving is very different than 20k of city driving, or short commutes. 20k over a year, or over 2 years. Oil oxidizes with time, and breaks down with temperatures, and gets contaminated more under bad conditions.

I would not feel comfortable going 20k without evidence showing the oil maintains adequate lubricity and wear protection. Someone on YouTube recently showed that GMs oil life calculator is actually pretty good and has a good buffer built in. So I suspect we're all changing oil too often.

I wish there was a way to change the filter without all the oil. That would be an interesting experiment.
