For pure vanity (think it would look better) I'd like to level my Ram 2500. I got a quote for cheap way (spacer) for $800 or new shocks for $1700. I'm sure new shocks would be better but is there any big drawback to just getting the spacer?

Spacers can pre load the spring more and cause a rougher ride.

If it's strictly for appearance just get the pucks. If your shocks are getting close to needing to be replaced then go ahead and get new preloads.

ETA: $800 seems outrageous for someone to install pucks. It's less than $100 for the parts and a two hour job max

I did the front only spacers on my Ram 2500 CTD about five years ago. It caused no issues or noticeable change in the ride quality. I put 295s on it at the same time and had an alignment done. I bought the spacers online and then had the alignment shop (Benson's in Webster, TX) install the spacers in. I think they charged me $300 total for their labor including alignment.
On second thought, I believe it was $300 plus the alignment cost of $95.
Here's how mine sits.

I put spacers on my 2010 Ram when I first got it. I can't remember if it was 1" or 1.5". No noticeable difference and I still think it was more comfortable ride than buddies Fords and Chevys.

$800 is a bit high.

My son got the spacers, and had our mechanic install them. They charged him about $450, and that included an Alignment.

I just got another quote for spacers for $550 with alignment. I'm going that route.

Did a Bilstein leveling kit on my Ram 2500 with springs/shocks. Parts are $500-$600. Very happy with it.

When you say 'cheap' do you mean a cheap kit with a spacer and all the associated drop brackets for track bar, sway bar, and eccentrics if needed? If so, the price seems reasonable. 500 for labor and 150 to align isn't far off where I live. That does not include parts.

Think it through before you do this though. On my new truck, I had a kit in it, but I am removing it. It looks great when getting groceries, but not so much with 4600lbs of shingles in the bed. I am going to replace my 2.5" with a 1.5" to keep some rake.
