Got a sheetrock screw in the edge of the tread. I know Discount will likely not patch it because it is in the so called "shoulder". I really hate to buy a new tire because I have a set that is about 50% worn right now. My coworker told me to just plug it and thinks it will be fine. I worked in a tire shop in high school and the owner always said plugs were garbage and a temporary repair (of course). Several folks at work said this is BS and have plugged tires their whole life and ran them for the life of the tire. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I had a nearly new tire on my truck that Discount Tire would not fix due to the leak being off the tread (barely, they agreed). I plugged it with a kit they sell at Tractor Supply. It was on the truck when I fixed it. I was always gonna replace it with the spare but kept forgetting. Got a full life out of it.

I have never had a plug fail in a nail sized hole. Tread or sidewall

You can always take it to a mom n pop / hablemos Espanol tire shop and get an interior patch on it also.

Thanks for the responses everyone. The above comment is what all the old timers at work also told me.

Plug will be fine. Just use the right kind and install it correctly. This video is o motorcycle tires, but still informative on tire repair options.

Discount tire won't patch it but pretty much any independent tire shop will.

All tire shops will probably tell you plugs are garbage. They're selling a service, so you have to take that with a grain of salt. Yes, they're selling a superior service, but plugs are reasonably adequate imo.

This. Tire plugs are amazing.

And like the other guy above, I've put them in my motorcycle tires and then proceeded to get a full life out of that same tire with no air leaks.

Do yall have a recommendation for a plug kit brand? This is the one I found at Tractor Supply as mentioned above:

I'll find the one the roadside guy used when I got mesquite thorns in TWO tires. I bought the same kit on Amazon and have never had one of those plugs fail me.

Edit... This is the newer version of what I've got

I have plug tires on everything from trucks, tractors, mowers, trailers and wife's car. I have yet to have one fail.

Here is the best I found, Nealys tire plugs. 18 wheelers use them. A must around the ranch.

Only time I have had a plug fail is when I got another nail in the same tire and that slow leak brought the whole tire down and I think broke the seal where the plug was like the tire had slow leak then all the sudden went flat. But…. There were like 4 plugs in that hole because it had a whole screwdriver handle embedded lol. Before that I'd gotten like 20k miles on that set of plugs.

I've used the $1 plug kits from Dollar General many times and never had one fail. If you do it right, it doesn't matter. It's a permanent solution no matter what the tire shops tell you.

If you can't plug it, utires.com.
