What happens if you buy a stolen vehicle

A guy I work with just had his pickup "repossessed" by the police. He bought it from a local guy who bought it from someone in Dallas according to the story.

The thing that seems odd is that he has owned it for about 4 months. He had a loan at the bank. He has it registered with the state of OK. How do these 2 things happen with a stolen vehicle? Is there any recourse for him?

have him call his bank and see if they have the title

if not titled in his name then he needs to check with the state (tax office) and see what notations are listed with the VIN
