Son has a 2020 Civic SI. Purchased new. Has been a good little car for him. Sunday before Thanksgiving it left him stranded on the side of the highway. Luckily not a week later, as he was scheduled to drive back to Phoenix from Dallas for a new job.
He had noticed for a few days that it was hesitating and accelerating strangely.. Said he was going to have me drive it on Monday. He thought it was a turbo issue. When he called stranded his explanation made no sense. It would go into gear, rev up, but it didn't move. When I got there, I confirmed that description was exactly true. Never seen anything like it my 50+ years. Complete clutch/friction plate failure while running on the highway where it didn't engage the transmission at all. Seems like it went from noticeable to not moving in a very short time.
As we had it towed to t a dealer and I explained that I doubted a clutch was going to be covered under the 5/60k powertrain warranty, he was ready with information that there was a TSB on the 2020 and 2021 Civic SIs for exactly this issue.
Service advisor was not aware of it either and initially told him it was not going to be covered and that is would be $4300. He sent over the TSB and after more jerking him around than was really needed and the Holiday delay, corporate approved it. Corporate required that he agree to pay 500 to totally disassemble the clutch to confirm the defect. 500 is covered now, but would not have been if they declined it. SA commented that in 20 years of working with Honda they had never seen that much dust and debris in the assembly.
Overall, the dealer turned out to be pretty good. They also found a few other powertrain things to fix under warranty and also told him they would replace all four wheels that had curbrash and damage from two fender bender type things that were not his fault and that he had just never pushed to get the wheels replaced for. I was shocked they are replacing the wheels.
Anyway, if you have or know someone that has a 2020 or 2021 Civic SI stick, you might want to let them know about the issue and the TSB. Apparently the coverage only applies within the 5/60k timeframe.
