The soon to be Mrs and I went and visited the aggieland chevrolet dealership, looked at a few cars and a couple of trucks, nothing major. Aside from the prices being outrageous at any level, the salesman(nice dude) says "for 4-5k you can buy a 1,000,000 mile/10 year warranty same as factory".

I laughed, uttered a four letter word and said you can't be serious, Class 8 trucks don't get that warranty. He swears it's true. So I asked him if I buy this 1.5L turbo 4 cylinder, it drops a valve at 200k, it'll be swapped no problem. He assured me aside from a $100 deductible it's covered.

I..just can't anymore with these people. Please someone tell me I'm crazy. He also claimed any Kettering dealership will honor it, since he owns several in the state. Are they that desperate to sell these cars?

That's the thing Buck, we have 0 intentions of buying from them, and stated so before he tried offering us bottled water. We just wanted to look at what chevy has to offer, off the cuff they are 3-6k higher than everywhere else.

How would they get out of replacing an alternator since there is no preventative maintenance with one? Or even a transmission since many have lifetime fluid you can't even change.

Correct. The fine print laying out all of the ways they can get out of the warranty. For all intents and porpoises you are locked into that stealership for life at outrageous service prices.

As others have stated, you can do it... But here's my hunch...

But you better understand the fine print and absolutely adhere to it 100%. NEVER lose a receipt, and never miss a scheduled service interval. Make certain that the service center you're using is accepted by the warranty. Make certain that mileages are properly documented on every service ticket. You can't ensure they put everything in their system, but you can certainly document for yourself!!!

If that XYZ service is every 50K and you do it at 48K, don't you dare wrap up a family vacation road trip at 98,003.

Also, say some work is done. Find out and get documentation as to whether that delays other standard or routine maintenance. Say they want 70K coolant system "service" and the car dumps a water pump at 50K. Do we still need to do the coolant service again at 70? Or was that a part of the water pump and now the new number is 120k?

I have it on my truck, company is Alpha. Fantastic coverage, paid for a new motor at 320k miles on my buddies diesel and paid for itself on my 1500

Why not go in and talk to a manager about it? At least find out if what he was saying is BS and see if they can offer a solution. My experience with local dealers has been great, they usually want to make things right

Generally what the entirety of the board has responded with is what I'm thinking. I just cant fathom these prices either, I bought a brand new 2018 Ram 5500 for 52k out the door, that truck made me a good bit of money and even made money on it when I sold it (used market was not being smart). Now they want close to 30 for a dinky car with what I believe to be an unreliable engine once it hits close to 120k.

Cars all over and they cant sell them, but they won't make a deal.

It came in handy a few times but about two years ago parts started becoming an issue and repairs starting taking longer awaiting approval to use after market parts. This year he needed the engine replaced and the warranty company voided it and refunded the cost of the warranty. They're a scam.

How is it a scam if they covered it and then offered to fully refund his warranty cost b/c they can no longer cover the vehicle (as in parts are NLA)?

Also, just take the $5k and put it in the stock market at 8% and it will be close to $7,500 in 5-years. In 10 it will be $11,000. If you never have a major expense with that car and sell it, now you have a down payment on something newer.

Dodge did offer me a factory 10yr/100k for my 1500 for $2,500...I'm seriously considering it. My uncle's 1500 is about at the end of his warranty and he said the factory offered him a 10yr/100k extended warranty for $2,500 and if he never uses it, will refund his money when/if he sells the vehicle or at the 10yr mark if he still owns it.

They didn't replace the engine. They voided the warranty and gave him money back which left him with a trash vehicle to sell for parts.

But it's a good point. It wasn't a scam as in they cheated him. Parts availability is going to all but guarantee you don't get the full time or mileage from one of these. My wife had a sensor go out this year on a 9 year old Cadillac and our mechanic had to buy a used one because GM doesn't make the part anymore. That is probably my biggest concern here.

I bought a genuine Toyota 10 yr/120,000 mile platinum warranty for my tundra. Wasn't going to originally buy it, but I ended up getting it for well under $2000. It was from a dealership in Michigan.

If you just do a little legwork, you can find the dealerships who deal in massive volume of these that can sell them for at least half the price of your local dealership. We also did the same thing for the warranty on my wife's Tahoe several years back.
