Howdy Everybody!

I've got myself in a bad situation at my in-laws place.

My mother-in-law let me borrow a truck to go shopping. It's a 2005 F150 that hasn't been driven for several months.

It needed jumped at first but drove and restarted fine for a multi-stop shopping trip. It also got a quick oil change and wash at the beginning of the shopping trip.

After the shopping trip, my mother-in-law found the key fob for the truck. It had been missing for about a year. It is a simple one that only has lock, unlock, and red panic buttons. I used it to lock and unlock the truck but didn't try to start the truck after using it.

The truck was parked overnight and now it won't start. The starter doesn't click at all but there is power for everything (lights, windows, radio, etc).

A kind neighbor had a battery tester that showed the battery had 12v even under load.

We did the "hit the starter with a hammer" trick with no luck.

The kind neighbor even had a spare good battery that we installed but it didn't change anything.

The red alarm light on top of the dash is slow blinking, even when the truck is off and locked. Every time I tried to start the truck the red alarm would blink rapidly. Using the key to lock and unlock the driver's door didn't change anything. Neither did locking and unlocking with the key fob.

A receipt in the glove box says the battery was installed in 2018.

I need to get this truck started and back in the driveway by tomorrow.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Edited to add: I ran the gearshift through all the gears to see if that would help. It didn't. Starting it in neutral didn't help either.

I'd suspect an issue with the PATS key. Try the other key.

I'll look to see if there is another key.

What does PATS stand for?

Also, cycle the gear shift. Possible neutral safety switch problem

Good thought. I forgot to mention that I tried that trick with no result. I'll add it to my original post.

Starter might be toast or the ignition, had a chevy that did the same thing minus the blinking indicator. New battery and a few new components, it was the starter.

So, the winner is Picard! Kinda.

The in-laws have three keys to this truck. Two are aftermarket and one is the original key.

The key I used for my shopping trip was one of the aftermarket keys. The one I used this morning was the original key.

I tried the two aftermarket keys and they both started the truck. Yea! Happy days!

Then I tried the original key, expecting the truck to not start, but it did.

So all three keys start the truck. The truck is operational. My mother-in-law isn't isn't stuck with a dead truck in her front yard.

Thanks to everybody for helping me out!

Does the theft light blink fast when trying to crank?

Try a different key?

Edit. Oops. Late to the party.
