I'm looking for a plug-n-play dash cam to put in my new teen drivers' car. I don't want anything complicated. I'm not pulling anything off to install. If I can buy it off Amazon, that would be even better. Really would appreciate any suggestions y'all have.

Hopefully someone in the know will jump in. Something about a capacitor to help it survive the summer heat.

I recently got this off of Amazon. It was about a $120. It comes with the front and rear camera, and is pretty much plug and play. The picture quality is really good. I'm pleased with it so far, and I haven't had any problems with it.

Got rid of mine - was more nervous that it could be self incriminating. Great if someone else is at fault - probably not so great if I am at fault.

So you drive like an *******?

Seriously, I don't mind taking responsibility if I am at fault, or if my kid is at fault. I'm worried about someone lying about a fender bender where someone assigns fault to them, with no proof, because they are new drivers.

Also, they might be more cautious if they know mom can pull dashcam video.

The last two I got were from Fitcamx.com. They have model specific versions that were easy to install.

Reminds me of a coworker that pulled up videos on his son's phone and one showed 120 on it. He said, "not too bad, I could have done better."

I'm not bad, but I have my times that I appreciate efficiency.

I've used a handful from Nextbase. Have the 222X in my truck now. It has a plug in rear facing camera. It essentially records about the same image as what you would see in the rear view mirror. There's also a version with the wide view plug in if you want to watch the inside of the car.

There's some good YouTube videos showing most of the actual cameras are made by one or two companies, and they go into boxes with bells and whistles made by someone else.

I've had two, both from Amazon they were branded as Apeman. Now it looks like the same cam is listed under iZeeker. They were inexpensive, made in china cameras …and they worked pretty well. I never had an issue pulling footage up and the picture was clear enough.

The reason I had two… someone broke into my truck and stole the first one. I'm not 100% sure that the break in happened because of the camera, but it was pretty much the only thing visible. Once they got in, they got plenty of other stuff though.

That video is terrible. And he's a moron, these are no complicated to set up and install takes a little time to run the cables. I spent 2x more time reading and Watchung how to do it vs the actual install itself, but it was DIY.

Mine already paid for itself when I was hit and run at a stoplight. Was great to go visit a police station the next day (I called the non-emergency number right after I was hit), I downloaded the video to a tablet so it was easier to view went in and got a police report, then spoke with my insurance.

In my opinion with all the crazy **** on the roads you should have one as part of CYA policy.

I have Rexing V1's in 2 of my vehicles and they work great. I've only had to pull a video once when my son was rear ended, and it certainly saved us a lot of hassle when dealing with their insurance provider. After they viewed the video, they immediately went from saying "We need to talk to our driver to get their side of the story" to "Where would you like to get repaired and at what time can we deliver a rental car for you".

I have a fitcamx in one of my cars. Picture quality is sub-par, the app is terrible, and there's no GPS for speed/location display on the recorded video.

Ok solution if you have a car where you want it to look OE. I'd go Viofo A119 or similar for functionality, picture quality, and price

I have had this model Garmin for the last 3-4 years (mines an older version) and it has held up well in the Houston heat.

I've had a viofo a229. It's fine. Good video quality but the app is a little clunky. Don't really have to get in the app often though.

I have a Nextbase 522. The app works decently and I can view on the camera's screen if I desire.

It also saves every time I exit on the off ramp near my house, There is a steep drop on the far left side of the ramp when exiting, I don't catch air there, but it's enough to trigger the video to be saved. If I increased my speed to an unsafe amount, I could catch some air.
