Felt like the clutch had been slipping a bit. Pulled out this afternoon, and got a grinding sound - wouldn't accelerate. Could still shift into all gears.

Pressure plate?

Yeah, maybe a slave cylinder. That happened on my old Ranger.

Yeah, no. LOL.

Getting pricing for a used vs new transmission. Depending on price, I may keep, or may sell and then buy something Honda or Toyota coupe.

Probably need a new clutch. Highly unlikely that your transmission is bad. Easiest way to check if you can still drive it is to use light accelerator and gear changes to get some speed. In any gear that has you cruising at 2500 rpm or so mash the accelerator. If rpm takes off without any significant acceleration then your clutch is slipping.

I've already taken into my mechanic, and he says it's the transmission. He just doesn't do transmission installs.
M yes, I will probably need a new clutch as well. But, the car would not move forward at all.

I would still be surprised if it's the transmission. I think your V6 Mustang has the same transmission as the GT so it should be plenty stout. It could certainly be broken but I would get another opinion and have the shop explain why they think it's the transmission.

I'm taking it to a Ford specialist, so they'll determine.

Yeah, they could not reproduce the problem today. They said they drove it for 6 miles, and it shifted fine. I had noticed that the clutch had started sticking lately; other times it was OK. My mechanic was able to reproduce the problem; they said that the car had to get warm first, and then it produced the same issue.

So, who knows.

I've got a four-door Tacoma, coming by Thursday anyhow. Long bed, quad cab; certainly, a unicorn.

Maybe worth having the clutch bled?

Now I'm curious. Your first post made it sound like the car was cold when this first happened. Is it true that it must be warm to have the problem, or can you also reproduce the issue when it is cold?

Grasping at straws here to figure out what could get worse in a manual transmission with normal operating heat. Could it be the springs in your pressure plate loosen as they warm to a point that they become ineffective?

Possibly. The car was warm (I had driven somewhere, stayed an hour, and then driven away - about 10 minutes when it happened.

My mechanic reproduced the issue - warmed the car up.

My in-laws mechanic couldn't at first - they didn't know exactly what the issue was until I stopped by this afternoon.
