Hi All,

I'm working on my daughter's Tiguan. It has 90,000 miles and leaks from the water pump.

After two days of wrestling, the intake manifold is finally off. There was a hidden bracket under the manifold that was a royal pain.

Now I have questions. Since I have access to so much stuff in the engine right now…
  • Should I replace or clean the injectors? If I pull the injectors from the block do I need to replace all of the injector seals?
  • How do I clean the carbon build up off of the cylinder inlets or manifold?
  • How do I clean off the crud from around the cylinder inlets without getting it in the cylinders?
  • What else should I do while the manifold is off?
  • The hidden bracket under the manifold was a pain to remove. The various how-to manifold installation videos do not show the bracket being reinstalled after removal. Does that mean that the nightmare bracket can be left off?

There are several VW boards on the web but there doesn't seem to be much activity on them. So double thanks for your advice on this.

I have nothing to add other than my daughter has a 2014 Tiguan.

Got an error code - P2015 - Intake Manifold Runner Position sensor switch around Thanksgiving. The intake manifold error was covered under a 10 year 120,000 mile warranty. VW replaced the intake under warranty.

Looking at the service ticket - they replaced the intake manifold.
Other work done included replace all 4 injector seal kits.
Also had them perform intake valve cleaning while everything was disassembled.
That's all the work shown on the ticket.

Not sure how long the intake runner was stuck. After repair the car drives significantly better than previous (sitting at 114,000 miles now)

I went ahead and numbered your questions from your OP. I did this exact thing with my 2008 GLI with the 2.0L FSI engine.

1) Yes, just replace them. $40-50 per injector is cheap enough to not deal with taking them somewhere to clean and bench test them, buy new seals, rent seal kit, install seals.

2) Brakleen and a toothbrush (or slightly larger brush) work pretty well. I have a smaller brush that attaches to a drill that I would probably use.

3) Rotate engine by hand and watch the valves close. Then you can spray in brake cleaner or another cleaning solution to soak without worrying about it falling in to cylinders. Use a shop vac to suck it out, and don't worry about a little falling in - it'll burn off quickly.

I assume you want to clean the top of the intake valves? How cruddy do they look?

I used this solution when I cleaned my valves: ttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TTXWC1E/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Soaked them in this then used a walnut sprayer and shop vac + picks to clean them.

4) I'd probably replace the PCV breather hoses since you have access to the one from the oil separator to the valve cover.

Thanks, Flaith!
