What's the best way to sell new tire take offs?

I am buying a used car that the dealer replaced all 4 tires with Yokohama Geolandar H/T 285/50R20. My wife test drove another car of this model and it rode smoother and all we can think of is because it had Michelins. I don't want to buy a car with new tires only to have to drop $1200 for new tires. Is it likely that I'll recoup any of the money in the Yokohamas by selling them? Where do you list something like that?

Texags, Marketplace, or Craigslist

Will the tire store not give you a substantial credit against your new tires for the barely used Geolandars?

Like Discount Tire? I didn't think they would do something like that.

When I have bought new tires early (like at Discount Tire), or I had a mismatched set where one or two tires had most of their tread left (maybe because of an unrepairable flat), I have been offered credits against the purchase of the new tires. You might ask and see if they offer you something comparable to what you'd get selling your tires to a 3rd party.

When you say "best" what are you trying to maximize?

Ease of sale?
Fastest?
Sales price?

lots of things going on here

what kind of car are you talking about? does it have different suspension/driving modes that may have affected it? The tire pressure could have been low on the other car and it could be too high in the one your buying.

I would try those things out first before buying new tires.

Like asked above, easiest would be to negotiate with tire shop for a credit and they take them off your hands. Probably not as much money as FB or Craigs, but they are gone.

Will these fit on rims currently carrying 275/55/20?

If so I'd be interested for wife's sequoia. Gonna need new tires in about a year.

Ever seen the movie Inception? Once an idea gets in a woman's mind, you can't remove it.

My email is in my profile. I'm going to have the vehicle in a week and take it to Discount Tire to see what they can do, but would happily sell to you.

Sure I think they will install on the wheels I have. Let me verify with DT next week and then we can talk.

It didnt ride smoother because it had michelins, prolly just had different tire pressure. Inflate properly and test it again when you can.

Tell your wife you replaced them, let a little air out, and put $1200.00 directly into your personal fund....

This

You'll be lucky to get 400$ for them in my opinion.

Never saw a response to what vehicle this is for, but is it possible the car that rode better was a lower trim model that had 18" wheels instead of 20s. That could cause a significant ride difference. Tire brand and 45 versus 32 psi may be noticeable, but a smaller wheel with a higher aspect ratio tire will for sure provide a noticeable ride difference. A different suspension option package as referenced above with automatic adjusting dampers would also provide better ride. I'm worried you're going to shell out a crap ton of money for new tires and be disappointed when nothing changes.

It was a 2013 v. 2015 Lexus LX 570. Same everything.

Again, this is psychological. The dealer already tried lowering the tire pressure, but now my wife is focusing on the ride quality so even if it made it the same as the other car, it didn't.

LX570 now we get to dig in.....

it could be the globes/accumulators are shot or not functioning properly

At my discounted parts dealership, I'm looking at $664 x 2 for the fronts and $706 x 2 for the rears. $2740 just for the parts. Swapping out the tires is looking like a steal.

But may not make a difference.

I did globes recently on mine. Big difference.

Also OEM globes are readily available on eBay for around $600 for the whole set. Tons of people on mud go this route, myself included. There are a few reputable sellers

How did you determine they were bad? Even at $600, I may be throwing money at something that ultimately won't satisfy the customer.

Something else I noticed after y'all started posting about the suspension system is the fluid has never been changed. It has almost 120k on it and the maintenance schedule says every 60k.

  • System was kind of slow to move through height modes.
  • Seemingly at random the damping would turn to garbage. Like it would blow through travel quickly, and then stay packed up. Sometimes I felt like I would hit the bump stops.

I did my globes around 100k. I bought mine with 75k on the clock and the maintenance history said fluid was done at 60k. Time is working against you as much as mileage. The thing about globes is it's a nitrogen filled rubber bladder. Over time the nitrogen will leak out and there's no amount of maintenance or soft driving style can change that. It just has to be replaced. They aren't going to perform like they should after 10 years.

At minimum you need new fluid. That alone could make a huge difference. It'll probably cost $150(maybe less) in fluid. Buy from the dealer. Make sure it's in metal cans.

Just remember that swapping globes means bleeding the system and needing a bunch of new fluid again. Part of me wishes I had just gone ahead and done all new dampers too. Have that thing riding like new for another 100k miles.

It really is a great system, but it does need some upkeep. I think the benefits outweigh the cost.

have you already bought this thing? how much extra was the 2015? Seems like the way the situation is unfolding the 2015 might be the better option and she is happy from the get go.

We bought the 2015. Yes, I paid a $6k premium and now am having to deal with these stupid tires.

Replacing the AHC fluid and/or globes is a great idea, but I'll still be met with "but the tires."

in my head the 2015 was the smooth one, great car once you get it/her taken care of, I've driven LC's for the 15 years.

I don't really get that. If she noticed the ride difference between the two then she should be able to notice the ride difference after work has been done. Maybe I misunderstood you, but it sounds to me like you're the one that planted the idea it's a tire issue.

But hey, I always like new tires.

If she's wanting a softer ride anyway, I'd consider getting some 18" wheels off a 200 Land Cruiser. Then you'll attack it from two angles.

Also if you're in DFW you're welcome to drive my LX some time and see how it rides. But I'm on 18" all terrains, load range E, so may not be that helpful.
