Looking for real world feedback from those who have the 3.0 in a Tahoe/yukon.

Considering one for the wife. Mainly concerned with reliability.

Her driving consists of weekly school drop offs and practices. Then we use it for 3 or 4 road trips a year. She will be 75% city/ 25% highway driving.

TIA

Bought one at the very end of last year, so only have about 1500 miles on it (bought a truck, not SUV, but same motor) and so far, so good. Still in break-in, but I'm getting about 25 mpg with combined driving. Power delivery is smooth, I really like it so far.

I have a 22 (truck) 3.0 and I have driven the hell out of it. 68,000 miles in 19 months. I may just be lucky but it's never missed a beat nor spent a day in the shop. My normal driving is 40% farm and 60% highway. Average fuel mileage since new is 23.5 mpg. I have enjoyed it but I'm not one that needs to drive something with gobs of power. It drives like a 5.3 with a little better low end.

The only thing I would worry about in your situation is the frequent short drives could eventually cause an issue with the emissions equipment.

What year did they put the upgraded engines in the pickups? Tahoes aren't due for the engine upgrade until the 2025 model.

OP: Our diesel Tahoe has 70 miles on it. No problems yet.

I'm very interested in getting one of these, but what is your need for the diesel? Do you tow?

Is hard to sign up for all the emission headaches if you don't need to tow.

I do have a necessity to tow some but probably not enough to justify a diesel. I just like the 3.0 concept. Great mpg. When I tow I tow for about 700 miles each way. So it's a long stretch.

I have had the 3.0 in a Silvy since 2021. Have had zero issues and only good experiences. Tows a 6,000 pound travel trailer with no issue

I had 3.0 in a 2022 Silverado. I mainly do highway driving for work and usually averaged 25 mpg over 100k miles. It was pretty good. After it got passed on to another employee it was having a rough idle issue that ended up being an issue with the wiring harness for one of the injectors.

I don't know that it's worth the hassle. More expensive oil changes, a fuel filter every 25-30k, def for only ~5 mpg better than a 5.3? I am back in gas engine now.

Our yukon will do 20 mpg on a long highway trip under good conditions. Our overall average is 14 - 15mpg. The diesel will do much better than a 5 mpg gain in the suv.

Oil changes should not cost more as it takes the same type of oil as the 5.3 and 1 quart less. Filters are about the same price.

We are planning on ordering a 2025 diesel yukon when they are released.

I've heard these 3.0 drink oil like a dehydrated fish in the desert. Is that true

Current diesel prices are 25-50% higher than current gasoline prices.

Fuel cost per mile is going to be higher than gas, even with higher MPG

I forgot to bring this up, this 3.0 has its own specific oil; just for this engine. It takes 0w20 dexos D. You can not put run of the mill 0w20 it needs to be dexos D specific which is either ac delco or amsoil (unless more brands have comes out since I had the Silverado.) Thus only gm dealers are going to be able to do your oil changes.

This is us. My wife has a '22 Yukon Denali that she really likes. Mostly drives around town, but occasional trips 2-3 hours in length.

The bad:
-There have been some infotainment electronic glitches here and there
-She hates that there is not a sunglasses holder in the overhead console

The good
-Great gas mileage on the highway (mid to high 20s), adequate gas mileage in town (mid teens)
-She thinks it looks awesome
-She actually likes the diesel and makes comments when she sees others like hers that are not diesels

Regardless of gas mileage, towing, maintenance costs, etc my take has always been get what you want if you can afford it because this is America by god.

With diesel prices and def I will never own another. After my 6.7 goes out I'm switching to gas.

Get the 6.2L = 420hp

Best of both worlds - no diesel and power - especially if live in major metro; downside is 93 octane use

Wife swears she will never drive 5.3L again - and she does the school / practice drop-off and pick-up too!

I just hate the afm lifters in the gas engines. All the half ton engines have a downside between gas afm, tiny turbo, or diesel with cost/Def. I'd love to have the 5.3 v8 from the 99 to 06 trucks back. I'm strongly considering a 2500 gasser next time. But might go 3.0 especially in a yukon.

There was a tiny period during covid where GM had some trucks with Afm deleted. I saw a perfect one on my dealer lot. Should have traded on the spot.

GM seems to garner the most internet hate of any manufacturer.

Why does their QC suck?

Love the 3.0 on paper, but do I want the hassle of a GM product? At least according to most of the internet, they are trash
