I drive a ton for work and I've always just bought gas wherever I see it cheapest and/or convenient. Anybody have recommendations for the best way to consistently save on fuel? I noticed a gas station with a $.10 discount for "easy pay" this morning and that's what made me ask the question. I think it might've been a Valero but I'm not sure.

Just wondering if anyone has researched this or just knows of a consistent discount Thanks.

Upside app.

I've cashed out over $300 in Amazon gift cards since May.

Upside is pretty good if you live in a gas station dense area. I don't, so it's kind of annoying to have to drive across town to find a station that participates in their program.

Otherwise, I have an Amex that gives me like 3-5% cash back on fuel purchases.

The EM Rewards (free) is actually great. Around me they are competitive on price and as you fill up you get points and that is worth a cash value on fuel.

I would avoid anything branded to one particular gas station brand and look for a credit card with some decent cash-back options. Citi Custom Cash card gives 5% back on the category of purchases you spend the most on each month, so if you use it primarily for gas, that could be an easy 5% back. But, it is also limited to like the first $500/month, which may be less than you spend on gas. Amex has some cards that may pay 3-4% back on gas, and other categories. Of course, paying an annual fee just to get cash back isn't ideal, but I think there are some low/no-fee options out there. Amex Blue Cash Preferred looks interesting and low-cost. Amex Business Gold could be a good option if you have other business purchases and can make use of the other benefits in a way that justifies the high annual fee.

Thanks. They push it so hard on the radio that I've kind of avoided checking it out. Will do, though.

Thanks

I'll definitely look into this.

If you drive GM products their cc is 4% back on everything with $100 back on fuel after some min spend each year.

You can redeem points for a new vehicle or even pay your note if financed through GM. I make 90% of my truck payments with cc points

Sam's Club Credit Card is 5% cash back on gas everywhere up to $6000/year.

Chevron is currently running a promo on the app right now where they are offering $1/gallon off of your first three fill ups up to 25 gallons.

Costco Citi Card is 4% back on gas

Chase Freedom Flex usually rotates a 5% back on gas one quarter of the year

Several cards will give you 3% back

Do you have a Walmart nearby? A Walmart+ subscription is their version of Amazon Prime and it comes with a $0.10/gal discount at Walmart, Murphy, and Exxon stations.

Also, if you're into the CC game, the AE Blue Cash Preferred gives 3% cash back at gas stations. It's $95/yr, though.

Kroger is our go to for fuel points. My wife does the Kroger Plus Boost membership and gets 4X points every time she shops on Fridays. $100-$200 every Friday for groceries equates anywhere from $0.40-$0.80/gal off each week. We've saved $1,100 this year on gas through this program.

Didn't mean for this to happen, but I have 3 cards that each pay 5.25% up to $2500/quarter on a category of your choice. I use one for gas only, one for online shopping only, and the other home improvement. The rest of my spend goes on a card that's 2.62% or 3.5% unlimited, depending on category. So essentially I'm getting a weighted 4% or so cash back on everything.

I usually check gas buddy when I know I need gas. Usually Costco or Sam's is 20c lower than anything else.

The Walmart+ thing sounds pretty good. I will look into that, too. Thanks

I have Walmart plus free through platinum amex and I pay using my cash rewards amex which gets me 5% cash back on gas so at $2.10/ gallon, I would be paying $1.90 gallon.

The 4x kroger points for shopping on Fridays sounds like a winner though.

Big ballin' with the platinum. I currently have the Sapphire Reserve and thought about going to the platinum, but we don't travel enough to justify it, and the earnings are only for heavy travelers. The gold card looks enticing, though.

I got something like 1000 bucks at home depot for signing up and have enjoyed several of the other perks. I travel a couple times a year overseas so I may keep it. The first year is really good though. Need to sign up for global entry to get that free as well.

If you are near Bucees, their card with TDECU is 5% off everything at bucees

This is a thread hijack, but Sapphire Reserve is still the best high brow travel card. I probably cash in $1500 in rewards a year from it, either through direct point transfers, $300 travel reimbursement, priority pass perks, and Pay Yourself Back deals.

I put almost everything on my Sapphire Reserve. I use Shell Fuel Rewards for a consistent $0.10 off per gallon of gas and just started using Sunoco Go Rewards, but it's only $0.03 off per gallon of e85.

Regarding travel with it, I've only had 26 flights this year compared to 49 last year. I'm going to miss Premier 1k

90% of your truck payment on cc points? what kind of spend must one have to do such a thing? Assuming normal truck payment is now $800?

Being nice and assuming a $500 payment, $450 a month in rewards is over $11,000 in spend a month

This is a lot closer. I run a lot of my business expenses through it. But at 4% there are things it makes sense to run through the card and pay a processor fee. For example I just paid all my property tax for my house and for my business last month. I think the county charged like 2.3% so free money.

Citi custom cash gives you 5% in the category you spend the most on every month so if you only spend it on gas it will be the number one category and you will get 5% off. The limit is $500 a month so if you are spending more than that it might not be worth it.

The Amex Blue Cash preferred is 3% off gas but it has a $95 annual fee (it is only 6% at grocery stores which is pretty useful and likely makes the annual fee worth it)

Wyndham Rewards Earner is 5x Wyndham points per dollar and is a $0 annual fee, but if you don't use their hotels it might not be worth it. (they have a business version that is 8x per dollar but $95 annual fee but if you value the points it pays for itself with other perks).

Those are the best ones I know right now.
