Besides gas mileage is the Chevy 3.0 diesel and good engine? i am about to order a truck and this looks very inviting. I am sure its been discussed but I wasn't looking for one until recently.

There are several owners here who all seem to like them.

I'd consider one if i were in the market

I'll be that guy…

GAS won't get you much mileage but diesel will!

I had one in an early model, 2020 year model. It had some kinks early on but I believe most common items have been resolved. I really did get 27mpg in a Z71! My biggest complaint was the terrible rancho shocks on the z71 that were worn out at 45k. At the time, there weren't any other options for shocks on the market. Bilsteins had a part number for a diesel model but no inventory anywhere

Get 30% better fuel economy! Pay 40% more for fuel! There's an Aggie joke in there somewhere.

If you drive at all on gravel roads change the front end suspension immediately. It has always sucked on GM Chevy. If you're just driving highway it's fine.

Maintenance is quite a bit higher on diesels. So what you save on gas you pay more per gallon and maintenance. So gassers are still more economical. Not by a ton but by some.

If you're comparing it against the 6.2, you're paying about the same for fuel.

I know. I think it's an awesome engine, but for some reason the very first thing people bring up is the mpg. It's a wash. It's a cool option that I would definitely consider but mpg is at the very bottom of the list of reasons why.

From what I hear people love it for towing and the torque band more so than for mileage.

I had my 3.0 duramax back in the good ol days of fuel costs….and today I'm in a 3.5 EcoBoost. Below charts are from when I owned a 3.0 Duramax

I meant you're paying about the same $/gal for diesel and gasoline if you have the 6.2. So with the improved gas mileage, it's not exactly a wash. I drive about 20-25k miles per year so it will save me a couple grand per year in fuel by going with the 3.0. Wasn't the main driver behind my decision, but it was a factor. I mainly hate fueling up so didn't want the tiny tank and 14 mpg.

Can you show the math?

6.2L is recommended to need 93 Octane since it's basically a modified corvette engine - so when you compare that to price of diesel it's nearly same ppg.

I met a guy who liked his, but he did say that he spent several thousand dollars on emission system repairs after he let the truck idle for too long. He was idling at a job site (I don't know how long). Does anyone have any experience with the high output 2.7 L?

I have the 3.0 and love it. Been a great truck since I tow a lot with a half ton. If I didn't tow anything I'd probably be better off with the 5.7.

Here's my math from a few months back. I did update the ppg current average to reflect most recent numbers. I'll pay less for the diesel, fuel up less, and get marginal savings, so it works for me.

I'm in the panhandle. I did not realize diesel was so cheap in the rest of the state. It's about $4.40 up here, but gasoline is about the same. That makes sense.

I drive a 23 Sierra with the 3.0 lzo. I did not give a hoot about MPG much when I purchased it. But the big thing the increased MPG gives it over the gas engines is range. These trucks don't have a larger fuel tank option like rams/fords which is a shame. To me a 500ish mile range is really freaking nice and hard to give up. The 3.0 gets you the range of an extended tank on a gas truck.

Go test drive one side by side with whatever else you're considering. I was planning on the 5.3 as I've never had a diesel before but the 3.0 simply drives/feels so much better than the 5.3 did I changed my mind.

I enjoy the 3.0 for it's drivability. The engine is quiet and powerful through a wide band of rpms. Looking at the rpm band, it produces approximatel 460 ft.lbs of torque from 1500-3200 rpm. The transmission is smooth through the 10 gears. Pulled a flatbed with 72 pickup in the hillcountry with ease.

Issues with truck. Front cv axles replaced. Front main seal replaced. Intermittent radio issues. Regen cycles.

Overall, I would buy the truck again. If the regens were less frequent, I would call it a win.

Do these trucks still sell around msrp minus a few dealer and company discounts?

Yes! Esp due to (short) shutdown in production schedule earlier this year - inventories are still ramping up based on demand. Best advice if looking to purchase - wait until 12/30 weekend for absolute best negotiating (unless you have supplier discount) as dealers will want to make their final numbers for 2023 and also not pay taxes on inventory into 2024 - given we are 30+ days left in year.
