I have a 21 Heritage Landcruiser, with just under 22,000 miles on it. I bought it in 2021, so I've had it for a little over 2 years. I have it with the third row, but its not really accessible if you have two car seats in the 2nd row. You have to take out a car seat to put the seat down. My 10 year old can sit between the car seats, but she likes the Durango better as she can access the third row easy.

I also own a Dodge Durango RT with the Hemi V8, and it has the second row captain chairs in the back. I have three kids, and two are in car seats. Right now, the Durango is the preferred vehicle for my kids. They like the captains chairs with the car seats, and my 10 year old can go back to the third row pretty easy. The Durango RT is a fun vehicle, has plenty of power, and lot of nice interior space. Its really a muscle car disguised as a family car.

So now that I have a vehicle with captains chairs, i am considering trading in my landcruiser for a new 23 or 24 loaded suburban with the 6.2 L V8.

I know the LandCruisers will last past my lifetime at least. My parents have owned at least three land cruisers, and they drive rough terrain every day. The Landcruisers held up better than any other vehicle they have had, including suburbans, driving the rough roads every day. My brother has one, and my sister has owned at least 3 or 4. Landcruisers all you have to do is put gas in them and occassionally change the oil.

But would like to hear some experiences with the 6.2L V8 Suburban. I don't want to trade of a tank of a car with the landcruiser, that requires nothing but periodic maintenance for 300,000 miles, and just really complicate my life with a possible problem suburban, just so I can have the captains rows in a larger vehicle and more space for luggage in the back on trips.

You need to keep that 21 LC and dump it in about 15 years. Get rid of the Durango now

Nah, that hemi is no joke in that Durango, it's a fun ride, and all my kids fit well.

The 6.2L will need lifters around 100k
the interior will start falling apart on Day 1

The power is ridiculous though, and it's very roomy.
It won't fit in most garages but I doubt you have that problem.

Like others have said keep the LC and trade the Durango. In 2 years the LC will be worth atleast 2X of what the Durango is worth

Keep the LC and get a minivan.

I feel you on 3rd row access, my oldest has been climbing over the center console or through the back to get into the 3rd row of the QX56 for 6 years.

Now she likes to sit between the boosters in my LX.

Turo'd a 6.2L Burb in DC in Oct. Wouldn't call it sporty but it sounded good!

you will definitely regret that decision, selling a reliable vehicle for a GM

I hate on Toyota stuff a lot, but trading it for a Suburban would be a major mistake. Especially if reliability is a critical concern of yours

Lol, yep, I know it. I think I would probably sell to my parents at a huge loss, and they give me their 2019 Land Cruiser with 85,000 miles, then I trade it for another huge loss for a suburban.

How can these people know a land cruiser lasts a lifetime if they've owned 3 or 4 and they're trading them in all the time?

That is the consensus on trading the Durango. I had an x5 before it got struck by lightning, and it was a great driving vehicle, best I've ever owned and better than a cayenne turbo I had. But the maintenance and repairs on the x5 were ridiculous, then it got fried by lightning. The cayenne turbo was worse on repairs and maintenance than the x5.

The Durango is not equal to the x5 as far as a driving vehicle, but it's close, and I like the Hemi a lot. I really like that car with the third row and captain seats.

Yep, I remember that on suburbans in the past,. The interior it's like the glue doesn't hold, and stuff started to come off. That's probably enough to keep me from buying one, I forgot about that.

That's good to hear on the power and roomy, that's what I would be going for,

Well, one had around 300,000 miles, and was under a shed at my parents ranch. Until they needed the space for a f150 with 287,000 miles. Mr brother in law went and picked it up and sold that one.

There is a 60 something model under a barn, runs, but has some rust issues. They have a white one with around 250,000 miles or so, that is our ranch get around tour and check things vehicle with several people. Then there is their most recent 2019 one which has around 85,000 miles. They got it for long trips, even though the white one didn't have any trouble.

Very good advice, I think this forum has changed my mind on it. I don't think I will get a suburban.

I hear you LOL. I have been thinking of ways to get her in the third seat. i was thinking about keeping one third row seat folded up, so she can crawl from the back to the third seat. Then we can raise that third seat next to her so she can have the whole 3rd row up. I thought about seeing if she could crawl over the car seats, but figured eventually one of hte little ones will get a foot to their head.

Put both car seats on the 60 side of the 60/40 second row and pull the 40 seat out for easy access to the 3rd row. Not as simple as second row captains, but it's fairly easy, reversible, and still allows for 4-5 little people in the second and third rows in a pinch.

I just shopped the Tahoe with a 6.2 and the Expedition with the high output EcoBoost and took home an Expedition. I didn't even want it at first, my heart was set on a Z71 Tahoe. However, after driving the Expedition to check that box that I cross shopped - I fell in love with the Expedition and now it sits in my driveway.

The Expedition (max) or Tahoe (Suburban) won't be as reliable as a LC - you know that. The 10 speed trans they both use is known to be problematic and the 6.2 has some issues with lifters from the AFM. But there's lots of vehicles out there with no issues and tons of miles. It won't be a LC, but I don't think it would be bad either.

I do understand your love of the Hemi. I traded a 5th gen RAM pickup with a hemi for the Expedition and there's really something special about that V8. The HEMI is for sure my #1 favorite V8.

Follow your heart. Cars are like Pokmon. Gotta catch them all

To say its a beast is not doing it justice.

I would liked to have bought it, but that would be pure vanity. And I'd be afraid of all that power in the car line waiting to pick up my kids from school. Plus the extra 50k or so for it, can't justify it.

Also, I like the naturally aspirated engines, tend to be less maintenance, and went with the R/T V8.

Teh one I have can tow 8,000 pounds are more anyway also, which is crazy for a mid-size suv.

How old are your kids? They move to the small boosters much quicker than you might think.

But you might also look at seats by Diono. The Diono Radian is a slim seat that works as both a rear and forward facing car seat and has a solid steel frame. Pick one of those up and then pick up any other brand and you'll instantly feel the difference. We used two in each car and the kids could easily crawl over them. They may even be narrow enough to put on the 60 side of the 60/40 2nd row.

I got a 10 year old, 2 year 2 month old, and a 15 month old. The last two are just over 9 months apart.

I have that exact car seat. I have the plum one for my daughter and the blue ones for son. I also have two orange ones left over from my ten year old. In total I have 6 of those car seats. I didn't know I still had the orange ones, found them, and gave them to my in-laws so they can cart them around sometime.

My 15 month old still faces rear, which pushes that passenger seat up a ways. Its not a problem for the Land Cruiser, but the Durango its pretty tight in that front passenger seat.

I have been thinking of doing that with two on the 60 side for the Cruiser. A previous poster suggested that. My wife is on the shorter side, around 5'2" maybe 5"4 can't remember. it may be more difficult to load the little one.

My boy (youngest) stays thin though, top 10% in height but bottom 80% on weight or something. He is as wiry as they come. She might be able to put him in the middle seat.

I just realized there is a narrow version of hte Radian. I think all I have are teh wider ones.

If carseat flexibility is a big factor, this may be of interest to you:

I embedded it to 4:33, if that doesn't work skip to that. He talks about the way the second row moves in most of his SUV reviews, one of the few I've ever seen who notes such an important feature for family vehicles. Also names a few others that have that feature as well.

Here's how the TX handles it:
