Purchasing a discontinued vehicle

Ford is discontinuing the Edge after the 2023 models to make room for more EVs. The wife really likes the Edge as we are needing to downsize since we have a child starting to drive. My initial thought is to not purchase an Edge, cause the value should go down more since it is being discontinued. Is my thinking correct? Would you purchase a vehicle that is about to be discontinued?

Depends on the popularity of the vehicle. Excursions held very well, FJ Cruiser held very well, Mercury Cougars are worthless etc. I think the edge may be right in the middle. If I had to guess it won't lose value any quicker than a normal used midsize SUV.

I would only worry if she wanted to keep it past 5 years 100k miles as parts will start to phase out, but it's a ford so i'm sure there will be a ton of parts.

OP username does not check out.

I doubt parts availability will be an issue for a long long time, so that wouldn't be a concern of mine.

What about Mach-E?

If not EV, I think the Honda Passport and new Hyundai Sante Fe both look great.

Won't lose value any faster than any other ford.

My boss got a new Passport and it looks really plastic-y on the inside like everything is rubber.( This coming from a Nissan owner.) It does not look or feel sophisticated at all.

I love my 22 Pathfinder-very comfy, great cushy interior, great infotainment system and so far 16000 miles with no problems. With the 23 model they fixed the only big design issue which is the passenger front seat not having 4 way adjustment. It works for me since I drive my elderly mom around so lower works for us but I get it.

I suggest a test drive and compare it to Highlander and Escape, and Rav4 types. Oh and Mazda CX-9!

Still driving around in a 2013 Edge we bought new while I wait for my Maverick order to ever show up. Just over 110K and still runs great. It has been a well built vehicle. I would hope one of the newest ones are being made as well as ones produced 10 years ago.

I read an article in the last year or so that said Edge owners are the most model loyal in the auto industry. They are more likely to buy another Edge than any other brand's most loyal make.

Yay, more EVs that everyone obviously wants!

I think the Edge has always looked great, but I would never buy one as I find them to be big on the outside and small on the inside. I think the Passport is a good recommendation but you would be happy with either, depending on your taste and needs.

Our 09 Edge still going. 156000 miles. No breakdowns, just change oil. If you get that out of '23, you won't worry about phase out.

Our 2012 Edge this past January folded at 225,000. If I could find another 2011-2014 Edge reasonably low miles... likely I'd buy it. Most reliable vehicle ever I've owned.

Yes. I'd buy a discontinued vehicle.

We have a 2013 with the V6 and love it. I have thought about moving to a new one, but the base pricing for it vs Explorer are close enough to go with the extra room of the Explorer.

Yeah, I think it all depends on what you plan to do with it. We had a 2009 Ford Taurus X (Freestyle/Taurus wagon based on a Volvo platform). That was the last year. We ran it about 12 hard years (purchased used). We got our money's worth out of it, but it was used up at after that decade. Had very little resale value. On the other hand Expeditions still fetch good money, even the worn out ones.

Aside from our blown engine... new struts and shocks... the exterior and interior would rate 7/10 and 9/10. Waiting for the cashier at the local convenience station to present me with the $500. I don't have th space to drop in a new engine. The multiple "we buy junk cars" offers were ~20% less.

More loyal than Corvette, Jeep Wrangler, and Miata owners? That's really hard to believe. Was the sample limited to midsize SUV owners?

Just wanted to add our Ford Edge experience. We purchased an Edge in 2010 for my wife when the kids were older and we were ready to replace the minivan

The 2010 Edge had the V6 and all the bells and whistles. Solid car. Comfortable to drive. Enough room for 4 adults. Good fit for us.

Sold the Edge in 2019 when it was approaching 100,000 miles. Replaced it with a 2019 Nautilus Reserve with the 2.0 boost. Lincoln changed the interior (different from the Edge) and Ford was offering free financing at the time on the Lincolns. Got a better deal on Lincoln with a nicer vehicle.

The Lincoln has been flawless since we picked it up over 4 years ago. Close to 45,000 miles. It's a great road trip car for the two of us (kids are out of house). Actually prefer the 2.0 boost with the 8 speed in the 2019 Lincoln over the 3.5L in the 2010 Edge. Quicker. Smoother. better mileage.

They have to make parts for 10 years as well after a model gets discontinued per law.

So dumb of ford to get rid of the edge and fusion. Two surprisingly good vehicles.

Ford senior management: "We still have a couple of cars that are interesting looking, what should we do about it?"
Ford executives: "Get rid of 'em!"

It's a dumb move on their part but to be fair there aren't a lot of options for people looking for a blobby, badly sized cargo area, hauls-nothing cute ute. So far as OP's question goes I wouldn't hesitate getting one. It's probably for the most part made of parts shared by other models excluding the obvious body stuff, and by the time those get scarce OP will have moved on to something else anyway.

Blame increased CAFE standards (and to an extent idiotic American consumers) for that one. CAFE is to blame for the fusion at least. Have to have a long and wide wheelbase to offset goofy gas mileage standards. Only non-sports car and non-truck I've ever owned was a 2012 Fusion and it was fantastic. You get more credit for a truck that claims to go 20 mpg as a car that actually gets 30+. Plus E85 vehicles get basically the same boost as PIHVs.

Then the execs realized people will pay more and more for the crossovers and with higher margins, it doesn't make sense to make a car platform. Then it doesn't make sense to make a tiny SUV. It was predicted back when the standards were introduced.

More or less.

I think Ford bought them out in the early 2000's and then didn't make sure there was any support for the people that had been buying them

Well my 2016 Edge's engine cracked at 57,000 miles and 3 months out of warranty. Ford had a technical bulletin for this "Ecoboost" issue, but only agreed to pay $5k of the $8k bill. Will never buy a Ford again.
