How long do you want to ignore this user?
My son, class of '25, is looking for a Bryan/College Station repair shop for his Honda CBR250 R that he uses to commute to campus. He's gotten pretty good at servicing his bike himself using the internet and YouTube, but he believes he needs some professional help. He's narrowed down his rear brake issue to the lack of pressure being built by the foot brake. Anyway, any repair shop recs I can pass on to him?

That shouldn't be a difficult problem to diagnose. Check the pads. If they are still good, then start with changing the brake fluid and bleeding the rear brake. Carefully check the brake line for any bulging or leaking. If there are still issues after bleeding and if the line is still good, go to the master cylinder. A rebuild kit is probably $25-$30, and can be done in an hour or so. Refill and bleed the brakes again. If he still has no pressure, rebuild the caliper. There's not much else to that brake system. I don't think that bike has ABS, although I could be wrong.

Fortunately, it's the rear brake, which should be seeing comparably little use when compared to the front, which does the majority of your stopping.

Brazos valley sport riders group on Facebook. It's a mix of the campus motorcycle club and older townies. They meet a couple times year to fix each other's bikes. If he posted up i am sure a couple of them would come out help diagnose the issue.

Just another option.

The only choice I'd send a kid to.

Greathouse only wants to work on generators and utv's. Action Sports is nothjng but try-hard bros that know more about tattoos and piercings than they do about motorcycles.

Thanks for all the responses. Maverick has inspired him to tackle rebuilding the rear master cylinder. He's already got the parts ordered. If that doesn't work for him, Pro Cycle it is.

I'd definitely bleed the brakes and check the lines before I rebuilt the MC. Hell, I'd probably just replace the brake line anyways. They do wear out, even if they aren't leaking. It's a good excuse to upgrade to braided stainless lines.

He did bleed the brakes and that is what got him looking for help. I'll pass on the tip to go ahead and change and upgrade the brake lines. Thanks!!!

Before jumping in feet first, have him bleed the system following the listed process for linked brakes. Then have him Velcro the front lever to the bar (as if applying brakes) overnight.

Does the CBR250 have linked brakes?

Snip from cbr250.net:

The CBR250 R has an integrated brake system - applying rear brakes will activate one set of pistons on the front brake.

He doesn't see any lines from the rear MC that would lead him to believe that the systems are linked. He just sees one line from the rear MC to the rear brake. His bike doesn't have abs so could those bikes that do have abs be a linked system you're referring to?

Prolly so. Still have him bleed it and then weight the pedal overnight. If he wants to wait until the end of the month, I have a friend that wrenches out of his home in Bryan. He does most of my work, and is very competitive on price. Unfortunately, he is on a PNW ride and won't be home until 07/31.
