So the truck I'm looking at trading in right now is paid off and has been for a long time and we received the title for it some time ago but in the intervening period of time we moved and now cannot find the title itself.

Is this an issue with a dealership?

Sounds like you need to go to your local tax office and apply for a lost title.

Yeah, I got all that. I'm not asking how to get another copy. I'm asking if it matters at the dealership. I mean, if you trade in something you still owe on they don't get title at the time of the transaction.

As long as you don't have a lien still listed on the TWX pull (registration) the dealer can apply for copy of title on your behalf with a signed POA and a form.

Selling Car to Dealership Without Title

Legally, dealerships need a title in order to accept a trade-in vehicle. This is because the dealerships need to ensure they are acquiring vehicles from the legal owner and aren't adding stolen merchandise to their lots. The exception to this would be if you're trying to trade-in a financed vehicle that still has a balance; in this situation, you would not have the title yet but would have proof of ownership through your finance agreement. In this case, you can trade in a vehicle without a title, but keep in mind that you will still be responsible for paying off your current balance.

I traded in a vehicle and didn't have the title in hand (but it was in my name). Dealer said no problem.

You can walk into a TxDot title office not a tax office and get a certified copy.

Yep, takes about 5 minutes and I think a few dollars. But the dealer can also do this for you with a POA. They will do a title search and make sure it's in your name.

I had this happen recently. Was worried as they sent my title to my old address and thought I was gonan have to get a new one. Had trouble getting an appointment and the dealer said they can do a lost title claim.

Eazy peazy for them

Either the dealer can handle it, or you can contact your local tax assessment office for service or referral.
