The Museum of the American G.I. in College Station has a 4x2 TS Gator that needs either a new short block or a rebuild of the current engine. The engine is a Kawasaki FE290D-BS28. eBay has a couple of options, but we're not certain about either of those. Leads or other assistance would be welcome. Contact me at mark96ss at hotmail dot com.

I have two gators with thousands of hours on them with that motor.

How do you know it needs a rebuild ? If you aren't going to do it yourself, you can goodie some of the forums and find a rebuilder that will do it. You just mail the motor off and they rebuild it.

I'd probably look at repowering completely though. I think more power would be nice.

Tesla swap it.

Or alternatively pretty much any small engine shop would be able to diagnose, fix, or rebuild it. Ike's in Bryan, or Brazos Lawn and Moto. They are a certified JD shop I think.

It has low compression and bogs down severely under a load. Considering this is a vehicle that some of our volunteers may be driving, more power would not be a wise move.

Could be lots of fixable things and not need a total rebuild. Valve lash and valve seat/seal would be at the top of the list.

Our aircraft engine guy has pretty much checked and double-checked everything. The mechanical brain trust is pretty much in agreement that it needs a rebuild, but we have too many other large projects (plus we don't have a honing machine) to spend a lot of time on this one.

I'd probably just rebuild it myself, if I didn't have time, I'd find the two rebuild places that everyone recommends on line with the gator forums.

That said, I bought a fully running 4x2 gator from a guy a couple of months ago for $600 to be used as a donor machine for my running gator. It turned out the the one I bought was only needing a few items, and had a transmission leak. So....yeah...i just fixed it myself and welded up the frame on my original and use both.

You can find some deals, and for what I paid for the whole thing, it's worth it just for the FE290 motor.
