Having a bizarre engine dying issue on my 2012 Ram 1500 with the hemi V-8, 170K miles. Occasionally and at random the engine just turns off - always happens when decelerating to stop or take a turn. Engine doesn't sputter or cut out, it just turns off. Generally I don't even notice it till I feel the heavy steering. I mean it's like I turn off the ignition.

It always restarts no problem - just put it in neutral and it fires right up.

I can't find any consistency to conditions when it happens other than always when decelerating. Happens when low on fuel and with a full tank, when exiting off the highway or just coming to a stop on side roads, engine temp super hot (after long highway run) or just normal running around town.

Anyone ever had a similar problem or any idea of cause? TIA

I had that problem on my 2006 Hemi 1500. If my memory is correct replacing the EGR Valve solved the problem.

2013 Jeep just did this to us twice yesterday. Bought used 18 months ago, so I assume it is a new issue. Took it to the shop last night. Will see what they say.

Per Google, this sounds like an issue that is common and I guess based on Jeep's work quality they give you a handful of causes.

My beater work car did this a couple of months ago. Exact same symptoms, but the re-start was 50-50 due to a blown fuse in the FI circuit. Ended up being a wire shorting out where the insulation was rubbed off on the back of the head head.

2011 Ram 1500 with 170K has done the same thing multiple times.

I had this issue on my 14 Ram. Cleaned the throttle body and it never happened again.

ETA: It didn't look particularly dirty, some minor gunk in a few spots. Just enough to disturb the airflow with the throttle closed while decelerating.

Check/add grounds, look for chafing on wires that would move when the drivetrain shifts forward/to the left
Edit: maybe this?

Haha, darn! I was gonna suggest checking the fuel tank. This happened in my truck several times in high school but it always started back up. I got so good that I could shift to neutral, fire it back up, get it into drive, and continue on without losing more than 10 MPH.

Finally, one Sunday I couldn't get it restarted so we towed it to a shop. The mechanic called early Monday morning and said he thumped on the gas tank and she was dry. Turns out the fuel gauge was reading 1/4 - 3/8 too high. I never fixed the gauge, I just always keep it above 1/2 a tank.

I don't have anything else to add other than good luck!
