Follow up to earlier thread. My son is looking at this car which is advertised as CPO at $22,700.

He's working the deal today and jackwad sales guy tells him to get the CPO warranty he has to pay extra $1300, otherwise he just gets balance of 50k warranty.

What the hell? Is this normal?

Sorry, yes, typo on my part. 22.7 + 1300 for CPO certification. Total 24k.

My problem with it is they list the car as CPO at $XX price. Then they try a BS move and say, "oh, you want the CPO part of that? Price is ACCKKSHUALLLYYY $XX + 1300."

It's BS.

That sucks. Unfortunately you need them more than they need you.

A few years ago, I had a ******bag salesman at Bayway Lincoln try to charge me extra for the CPO warranty on a Navigator. I ended up with a CPO Navigator from another dealer and the warranty was included in the base price, as it should have been.

As another data point, we recently bought a CPO Lexus RX and there was no extra charge for the CPO warranty - it was included.

CPO cars sell for a little more than regular used cars partly BECAUSE of the extended warranty that comes with them. Charging you an extra line item on top of a premium base price is BS. They are probably trying to cheat you.

This is typically against their dealer agreements with the manufacture as well. Some places do it from time to time and it's complete BS and bad practice, but they do it anyway and get away with it. They get away with it because some segment of the buyers will still buy... unfortunately there is no repercussion in reduced sales or enforcement from the top down who continue this practice right now. I'd just buy elsewhere and although that doesn't help you in the short term, maybe one day it'll catch up to them.

Happened to us when we bought our Toyota Sienna back in 2019. I just gambled and said screw it, shouldn't be an issue with a Toyota.

I have the paper quote with it included. Thinking seriously about sending it to Kia corporate customer dept and ask if they condone the practice. Maybe they do.

Here's what it's like:
Going to a restaurant and ordering a bacon cheeseburger that's $10 on the menu.

Waiter asks "would you like bacon on that bacon cheeseburger? It's $2 extra."

Then you object and he says "the bacon's gotta be installed onto the burger. How else will it get there?"

Such bullcrap.

Has the car already been through the CPO process or is that what the $1300 is to complete?

Website labels it "certified pre-owned". Carfax says "listed for sale as certified pre-owned".

In my book, that makes it a CPO.

I get that. Ask for a copy of the paperwork and pass on the warranty.

Or would it be like adding an automatic $2 to the bill because someone has to bring you that burger

Or charging $2 in case you throw it up and ask for a replacement.

Maybe it's just me but 1300 isn't much when your buying it..

It's a dealer markup. Call a spade a spade. They have already incurred the expense to get it CPOd.

It's not the money it's the fact that they advertised it deceptively. It's listed as a CPO at $22,700 when in reality it's a used car at $22,700, not a CPO. Seems to me like false advertising.
Jack Cheese

Exactly. He got them to knock off the CPO fee and the $1k GPS they added, they wouldn't budge on the stupid VIN etch, but he made the deal and bought it (with CPO coverage).

I think they just added all that crap to give room for negotiation. He still overpaid in the grand scheme of things but not as badly as it could be... and he HAD to buy a car this weekend.

I did send the evidence to Kia customer dept and asked if they condone the practice. We'll see what they say.
