My daughter has a 2016 Volvo SUV. She bought it used in 2017. It had very low miles. At this point, it only has 25,000 miles. So still very low miles.

She asked about getting her tires rotated. I told her yes, please get them rotated. They are whatever Pirelli model that Volvo puts on that vehicle. She doesn't believe they have ever been rotated.

The vehicle is garage kept at home and at work, and it has such low mileage because she lived abroad for a few years, worked from home during the pandemic, and can walk to most places she needs to shop or eat.

Are the tires being 6+ years old a concern considering they have been in a garage for most of that?

I would absolutely err on the side of caution. If she's going to Discount, they likely won't touch them.

She's got a local shop where she has her maintenance done. They will either do it or try to sell her tires. We shall see.

I'm going to take a look at her tires when I see her next. Couple of weeks. If she gets them swapped out before then, even better.

Aside from knowing the date of manufacture, old tires are hard to gauge. They can go from being in good condition to having a separated belt in an instant.

I recall my dad purchasing some Pirellis from a llantas shop before a family road trip and they made it to Gulfport, Mississippi on a Sunday afternoon before separating lol

I'd think they might be dry rotted, which happens if they are stationary like that.

If there's no cracking, just run em.

When she lived overseas I made trips to her place periodically to check the house and drive the SUV to keep the battery charged and the gas fresh.

I'll take a look soon. She doesn't drive much.

Post pics of tires.

If they're in the garage, the dry rot will be slower than normal.

I'm 90 miles away but will ask her to get me some pics

If she's going to start driving it, especially on the highway, I'd go ahead and get them changed. I don't like the idea of serious driving on 6+ year old tires. On the other hand, if her current driving habits are going to continue, have the tire people take a close look at them and get their opinion.

Pirellis are good tires but they're a little on the soft side. I don't know if that's good or bad for that long of time. I had a set on my car that got noisier as the time went on, but they ran for 60K and 4 years.

According to this page, DT won't service anything over 10 years.
