I bought this from a friend a couple years ago and it had pretty new oil and filter at the time. I'm ready to change the oil and filter now. Usually put pennzoil full synthetic in my vehicles but not sure what's best for the yota which has 200,000 miles and a four cylinder. I bought it as an extra ranch vehicle and for kids to learn to drive the stick shift but find myself driving it more often now with $4 gas.

I have an '08 Taco. I run Mobil 1 Full synthetic 20,000 mile oil with a K&N oil filter and change the oil every 5,000 miles. Yes, probably overkill, but for a few extra bucks.. no big deal.

I always ran castrol gtx 10w30 in my 22re yotas with a Toyota oil filter. Has an anti drainback valve or something that makes it better... never had any oil related issues

Would definitely go with a non-synthetic

So non synthetic is better for older vehicles?

Yes high mileage vehicles can develop leaks when switching from non to synth. Stick with old school oil based on what's in your manual

High mileage Penzoil, whatever that's called. Do a more conservative change interval (no more than 4K) and I'd recommend at least every 9 months regardless of miles rather than a year for a younger, lesser mileage engine.

I can't ever find full dino-juice anymore. I run syn-blend Motorcraft if my '87 Bronco. It's cheap and does the job for 3-4k.

The thing that will get your in trouble is using a 'high-mileage' oil and then going back to one that isn't. The high-mileage will swell seals to prevent leaks and then switching back to a normal oil the seals are likely to shrink back and cause leaking.

My dad would change to Mobil 1 at the first oil change on a new vehicle and never deviate from full synthetic after that.

He got 200,000 plus out of his 90's smaller Toyota. His T-100 he got about 250,000 out of before he sold it. I drive his Tundra that I bought from him and it's got 250,000+.

That being said, stick with conventional if that's what's been in it this whole time. Or the synthetic blend if that's all you can find.

Synthetic is better, esp on low mileage, short trips, ranch type truck. Short trips with low heat build up + dino oil = sludge.

Scotty Kilmer agrees (for whatever that's worth):

I also had it happen to me in a Tahoe with a switch around 130K. No leaks prior to then but a leak afterwards.

Some people don't buy it, but Kilmer makes a good point: unless you're doing more than one oil change a year, why bother with synthetic anyway? Conventional is cheaper and just as good for that purpose.I get the stated benefits. I used full synthetic in my last car, my wife's vehicle, and 2 previous ones. But for a 30 year old vehicle with high mileage, conventional works just fine. It wouldn't have high mileage if it didn't!

I'm disappointed in the automotive board.
