Fuses - 2013 F150 5.0?

My truck wouldn't start today when I tried to leave work.

This has happened a couple times over the past month and each time, I've pushed down on the fuses and gotten it to start. Today it wouldn't.

The truck sounds strong on the attempted start up, so I know it's not the battery. It seems there's no spark.

Looking at the manual, there's 4 fuses 75-78 that could be the problem. Those are the 4 fuses that are the "Powertrain control module voltage power" fuses.

Ford dealer said I have to bring the fuses in to the dealer before they will sell me any (claim they have to see the fuse to know which ones to give me).

So I'll go pull the fuses and then go to the dealer, but is there anything else I should be getting as well or it likely that it's just a bad fuse? When my dad and I looked at it a couple weeks ago, we couldn't see any visible corrosion.

Are they just regular mini fuses? Why go to the dealer?

According to this, IF a fuse is the problem, I would suspect # 75 or #78

Might switch a like sized fuse from another spot and see if it fires up.

Yes. Look to be the small mini fuses. Ford said they have so many fuses, they couldn't guarantee they would give me the correct fuses.

No reason I'm going specifically to a dealer other than I figured it was more likely they'd have the correct fuses.

Edit to add: You have a good idea on swapping fuses. I'm going to do that tomorrow. I agree 78 seems like a good candidate.

The truck clearly starts and has sufficient power. All interior power comes on when I turn the key, it just won't start. What happens is I turn the key, and it makes the start up noise, but will eventually stop when it's not able to fire.

An auto supply store will have the fuses you need.

I tried swapping fuses and that didn't work. Waiting in a tow now to get it to the dealer to diagnose.

Betting on a bad fuel pump or something like that.

You were close.

Tow truck came out and he thought the same, but when I turned the key, there was no power going to the pump. The fuel pump fuse relay was pretty melted (i.e. it broke apart when we pulled it out).

On luck of luck, the truck literally has a spare 20a fuse in the passenger fuse box. A quick swap out and it started up.

Now to figure out what caused the short (and buy a couple extra fuses just in case).

Ok..I called a local shop near me and they were going to double check, but thought it might be a known issue with the 2013 F150 that the fuel pump fuse will blow out every once in a while.

He said he doesn't necessary remember entirely and it may not be true, but said that they had to put an "external" fuse in to fix the issue.

Does that make sense? He said he was gonna check with his boss when he got back to make sure he was remember the repair correctly.

Edit, did some googling and found this:

I've had my truck in for recalls at the dealer and they've never mentioned this one. Should I call them on this?

This is the issue. You found the correct TSB.

The way too tiny fuel pump fuse gets hot over time and melts in the socket. Once it happens it happens more often after that because the entire socket is damaged.

Buy the EL3Z-14293-A fuse relocation kit listed in the TSB and you can swap this to a new location yourself if you want. Here's a Youtube video on how to do it.

I finally found the old thread we had on this:

From the description it looks like they would cover it if within your normal warranty period, but not after.

Good news is the relocation kit is about $30 and less than an hour labor. If mechanically inclined, you could do it yourself.

*nm, Picard beat me to it.

Sounds like even if under warranty he'd be without his truck for a week with no loaner.

Yeah. The only lucky thing is I still have the option to work from home, so it's tolerable to have it out. I haven't been able to find a mechanic or dealer that has time this week to look at it.

Honestly think I'm just going to trade it any anyways. It's been a good truck, but little things starting to add up on it (like this) that make me think it's time to upgrade.

ETA: I could probably do most of the repair myself except for the soldering which I don't have and haven't done before.
