Good morning and happy new year!

Our son's first vehicle will be an '03 Chevy extended cab. Going to get it repainted this spring in same color (black). Any guesses on cost?
Any recommendations for getting this done in the San Antonio area?

Thanks y'all!

Costs of repainting a 19 year old car is usually more than the value of the car but we live in interesting times.

From the CarFax website:
Quote:

How Good Does the Paint Job Have to Be?

Some shops offer "good, better, best" levels of paint jobs, while others may offer only one level and it might not qualify as "best." Here is how one shop owner outlined his options:

At the low end: No trim is removed, just masked, and the existing finish gets sanded before repainting. The estimated cost is $1,200 to $2,200, and the warranty is for six months to a year (set by the paint manufacturer).

Midlevel: Some trim and the bumpers are removed, there's more surface preparation, and higher-quality paint is used. The cost is $3,500 to $5,000, and the warranty is three to five years.

High end: All exterior trim is removed, the body gets extensive repair and preparation, and the paint is top quality. $7,000 to $15,000, with a lifetime warranty.

I remember my dad telling some of his car flipping stories from the 70s. He took a car with a hole rusted through the body, jammed a beer can in the hole, bondo-ed over it then took it to Earl Scheib for a $59.95 repaint.

Today Earl Scheib starts at $499.99 for an econobox. And at that price you won't get a clear coat and you would need to do most of your own prep unless you like the egg peel texture of road grime on the bottoms of all the panels.

In Los Angeles, I just got a quote for $4,000 for my 2001 Grand Cherokee. Yes, more than it's worth. But... I've had this one for 14 years and I know exactly what's wrong with it.

The clearcoat has flaked off over most of the blue paint and the blue paint is starting to turn purple.

Dude told me I should order new badges (Jeep, Grand Cherokee, 4x4, V8) before I bring it in. I suppose I could just leave the badges off and keep everybody guessing.

My Mexican-American neighbor told me that he has a guy who can probably do it for about $1,500 - $2,000 cash.

What are you going to do with it? You might think about a bed liner paint job instead. No more worrying about scratches, cleaning is easy, and likely a little protection against hail (if you get any).

Incidentally, are you going to be the one to "turn out the lights" in Cal when everyone else has left?

In SA? How much extra for an airbrushed naked chick on the hood and script last name on the driver side door?

Buy him some sand paper and a bunch of cans of spray paint and let him do it. However much effort he puts in will determine how good the paint job is and it'll be something he can take pride in.

You could probably wrap it for around $2500.

Serious as a heart attack, the last time I was visiting my daughter in Houston, there was a Toyota Tacoma parked on her street that had a tan colored bedliner paint job. The entire vehicle was covered in the textured stuff they use for spray-in bedliners.

There are still a whopping 39M+ people in California so their population will probably never go to zero and it will be a little while before Florida and Texas surpass California in population.

I've got 56 more days until I am able to sell my home - per capital gains tax law. After that, it's full speed ahead to somewhere in the 775xx range of ZIP codes.

Bit of a red flag, because supplies should cost more than 1500 to paint a full car. Real (even budget) car paint ain't cheap.

Maybe he's thinning Rustoleum and spraying that? It can work well on a beater, but will never match a real paint job. Basically this would be equal to a "farm implement" paint job.
