Should I do my own brakes?

2019 Pilot needs front pads and rotors and I've never done them myself before. Should I give it a shot or pay someone to do it? How long does it take?

I'd set aside a day to do them if you're doing all of them. You don't want to get in a hurry. You should be able to find a YouTube. I can do all four brakes and rotors on my Super Duty in about 4 hours but I'm meticulous and I've done them dozens of times.

Again, don't get in a hurry. You want to have time to clean and lubricate things as well as address any issues if you have any. Just remember that the local brake place is staffed with high school kids with C averages. You'll be fine.

Just do one side at a time and then you'll have the other to use as a reference.

Again, watch a YouTube or three so you know what to expect.

Brakes are pretty easy, especially if the rotor surfaces are in good condition and don't require replacement

I kept my 95 land cruiser so I could have a car to work on (im not a gearhead, but can follow a manual). The new cars are way more difficult to work on, with sensors everywhere.

Nope, you will definitely die if you do your own brakes. We had an expert come in a while back to set the forum straight on the matter.

bribe a buddy with some beer who has some experience to hang out with you while you do them, just in case you get stuck. otherwise definitely give it a shot

Considering the quality of the "expertise" of an expert, yes do them yourself.

It's one of the few DIYs that's not too bad. Just make sure you have a couple of things to make the job easier.

  • Makeshift way to hold brake line up after you pull pad assembly from rotor, such as a metal coat hanger.

  • Clamp to depress brake to make room for new pads which will obviously take up more space

  • Brake squeal lube and degreaser

Yes you should do your own brakes. Just pump them a few times before you drive. Sometimes it takes a couple pumps to get the pads up to the rotors and you don't want to find out on your test drive.

This is the way. Most DIY guys are happy to trade knowledge for beer.

This is VERY important! Don't go putting it into reverse out of the garage without building the pressure back in the system…you'll **** your pants when the pedal goes to the floor and you're not stopping.

This happened to me once after helping my brother do his in his garage.

I backed out of the garage without a care . . . Onto his VERY steep driveway. Luckily I realized it quickly. Couple good pumps and I kept it from rolling into the street.

Just did a brake job on a 2010 F150, wasn't bad. Wasn't moving fast, but it took from 8AM to 3PM to do brake pads, rotors, a brake fluid flush, and a test drive to bed the brakes. Lots of time moving carefully and watching youtube videos.

I would recommend upgrading your brakes to some version of performance. The stopping distance improvement is noticeable. It has certainly saved me from a rear end collision once as I could out-stop the car in front of me when he slammed on his brakes.

I did EBC brake rotors and hawk composite brake pads on the front axle. Bosch rear rotors and hawk composite pads on the rear. Just replaced a set of all of the same components after 100,000 miles. All the pads were low but still had pad life. Rotors were operable but needed to be replaced. Impressive for a 100,000 miles.

if you DIY it, just an FYI that brake pads are sold on a per axle basis. So one box usually has four pads, two for each rotor on an axle. Rotors can be sold as a set or individually, so double check the packaging.

I would recommend having a good hydraulic floor jack. Don't buy harbor freight jack stands, been a lot of recalls lately on them. Get a different brand from a different shop. Most people have a simple jack for getting better access for an oil change. When you need to get the car off the ground to replace all the tires, people underestimate how high you have to go as you have to out raise the suspension.

Did my 2017 F250 rotors and pads. Hardest part was getting the pads to set right in the calibers. First rotor and papas took me about an hour. Second one took about 20 minutes. There are probably 5 videos on YouTube to help with

Where are you located if I may ask. I do auto repair in Houston for cheap if you're local and interested. Happy to explain and help you to do the job with borrowing my tools if need be too.
