How do you avoid pressure tactics to sell you extended warranty at the dealership?

I am not much of a negotiator. I get otd price via email and in my last two new cars I chose the price that looked decent and went to the dealership. Sales guys are easy going, its the finance guys who do the pressure sales tactics. Adding gap, warranty, glass protection, etc and trying to pass them off as required. Then getting the manager in and then the director...

How do you avoid that discussion from going too far and wasting time?

Say no thanks and be willing to walk away.

If you can't do that, pay for the cheapest thing to avoid the confrontation?!?!?

Say no. Roll your eyes and say no again. Get up and leave if they can't take no for an answer.

Ask why they're pushing it so hard. I once told a girl "if you're that concerned about this truck falling apart after 36k miles, I've made a mistake and need to leave." I think I short circuited her brain.

When I bought my Tundra I said "I thought your sales person just told me I bought the most reliable brand ever made," he countered with "reliable but not perfect". I just laughed and told him he was wasting his time.

You say "no thanks" over and over. "I'm not going to buy any add-ons, let's just get the paperwork finished because I have a commitment later" works well too. I have not found it difficult. In most cases, they get your drift after the first 2-3 and speed thru any subsequent asks knowing the answer.

Yep - negotiate out the door price. If it changes a penny - walk. This is where it's best not to have a trade in so you can easily exit.

If you're a horrible negotiator shouldn't matter by the time you reach the finance/warranty guys. There's nothing to negotiate unless you actually WANT some of their add-ons.

Politely say no thank you, I understand you have to give me your pitch, but I will continue to say no thank you.

As mentioned above, get the price locked before you even go to the dealership to sign. Before you take pre-sign test drive reconfirm the price, then go say "no thank you" 20 times and digitally sign your name in the finance room.

Start off by getting pre approved with a credit union for financing. Make them beat it. Start saying no early and often.

I did this (although with a GM one) and they came within $200 of matching the online Extended Warranty quote I'd gotten. And I didn't have to pay the $100 online financing fee. And if you want the extended - you DO NOT have to buy it until the last day of the MFG warranty (3yr/36,000 miles or whatever the brand is you're buying)

Just decline what you dont want. Say no. They are salesmen and they prolly hear 20 nos for each 1 yes. They are used to it, comes with the territory, they wont take it personally.

Alot of the wareentyt have a full refund in the first 30 days. Kind of a pain but you could cancel it with the
warrenty company.

Or just play the "this is all I budgeted" card and your sorry as you know it will hurt their commission numbers.

Please don't do either of these.

Please don't do either of these. Just say no if you don't want something.

Buying and cancelling will be such a pain in the ass. You think they push hard to sell you a warranty? Wait until you hear them when you're trying to cancel.

Also, never apologize to car salesmen or worry about their numbers. That is 100% not your problem. If you apologize for something, they're going to play into it. That's literally their job.

When walking into the financing office:

"If you try to sell me anything. I'm leaving. Do not tell me that you are "required" to tell me about something, because I don't want to hear about it."

2 of the last 3 cars, I got no sales pitch. On the 3rd, the guy tried to tell me "I'm required to tell you this" when going into some pitch and stood up to walk out. He very quickly recanted and said "I'll just mark down you said no."

It works. It's the first thing I say after "nice to meet you."

Yep this is the only no-hassle way to buy a car.

Planet Ford tried me on this once after I drove over from central texas to pick up my Explorer. Sales guy puts the papers in front of me to sign and the total was different than our agreement. I asked the sales guy why the price was different and he gave me the bogus explanation about a missed fee. I calmly asked if he had a recommendation for a place to eat lunch nearby. He gave me an odd look and I said we would like to eat some lunch on our way back home, we're leaving, as I got up to leave. He shuffled off to get the sales manager and the fee was removed.

I negotiated the cash price over the phone and came to an agreement. Got to the finance guy to close the deal and he starts with his pitch whereby I interrupted him and asked him his name. He replied with his name, and I said, "Look Mr. X, I understand this is your job, but I want to be straight as an arrow here and not waste either of our times. I'm not going to purchase any add-ons, so can we just get to the point here and finish the deal?" He paused and look like I hit him with a baseball bat for 5 seconds, then in a very disappointed manner, said, "Yes, sir" and I was out of there in 5 min.

I just tell them cool, but only if you figure out how to do it for $100 month less than already agreed. They laugh, I laugh and then they realize I wasn't kidding.

My story was similar in that I asked if the salesman was wearing a jersey underneath his button down. He confusedly said no? And then I asked if it looked like I was wearing a jersey, and he said "no". Then I looked at him and told "then why are you playing games? We already had agreed to an OTD price and now you're just wasting my time." I got up to leave, he apologized and got his sales manager to fix it. But by then I was already playing (pun intended) hardball and told them I like nice even numbers. Ended up getting them to shave another 170 or whatever off the price for an even rounded $30K. Why you always go around the end of the month during a big sales event.

Being able to walk away is the ultimate leverage in car buying. I had a car salesman chase me down in the parking lot with a counter offer that he had said previously "wasn't possible" because I had gotten up and walked out.

Just say no and walk out. I actually did this when I bought my first car out of college. When I got to the finance guy to sign they had added some arbitrary $800 fee to the paperwork which was never discussed beforehand and they couldn't quite explain. I refused to sign, was escalated to the GM, and he told me I was the reason why car dealers got a bad name. LOLWUT? Told him tough sh^t and this non-sale was their fault for trying to pull one over on me and I walked out.

The finance guy called me the next morning and removed the fee.

On this warranty stuff, depending on the type of car we are talking about I would actually recommend the tire and wheel one. This assume you have a sports car and/or low profile tires and live in a city with terrible roads like Dallas. I've hit ROI within 1 year both times I've had that package and it paid for itself multiple times over.

I bought a truck from Cavender GMC in SA and did this. I said I will buy this particular truck only if it is to be delivered to me in NW Austin if you want to sell it to me. Finance manager tried to get me to come in to "learn all the functions and tech" while also signing the final paperwork and pick up the truck. Reminded him that this was delivery only option. They followed up with the gap ins/extended warrant/add on call before driving the truck up to Austin. Salesman delivered to my driveway, signed paperwork and he left 10 min later. It was my first time doing this, but I was fairly hassle free. I did not have a trade-in to muddy up the process.

My most recent finance guy experience went like this "well, withyour great credit (800+) we can get you a rate of 4.7%"

I stood up, said I'll go get a 3rd party lender and be back when I got a better rate.. He instantly said, "well im not going to lose you over an interest rate, how does 1.9% sound.

bull***** literally everything they have can be negotiated. you really want that extended warranty. Tell him it's now required if you're going to buy, but you're not paying xyz.. You'll pay abc and if he cant do it you'll go elsewhere. Be prepared to walk adn do not compromise. They'll get it done.

Too many people hate the negotiation part. When you are ready to buy, set your mind to this not being an in and out purchase (it's 40-80k for a truck at this point, so it shouldn't be). Go in there like it's a game and do your damnedest to beat their asses. It's not like there isn't 75 other GMC, Ford, Dodge, Toyota dealers within driving distance.

I had good luck on my last purchase (Tacoma in 2019) with telling the sales guy I know what I want to buy, I know someone will sell it to me, and I will go with the best price and no games. Sales guy was great, let him know I would go with their deal as long as I walked into the finance guy's office and was done in the time it took to sign what I needed to sign and him a check. I was in and out in 30 minutes including trade in, but this was paying cash.

When the sales guy hands you off to the finance guy get his business card so you can call him if things go south and tell him he is about to lose a sale.

Seriously, the first time you tell them no you'll be surprised how much power you have as a buyer in that situation. Most salesmen are easy to get to a reasonable number, you have to treat the finance guys like a kid asking you to buy them a bunch of toys for no reason.

Set your numbers and hold to them, don't tell them you'll walk if you won't do it. I also tell them I'll only test drive the car alone, I don't want them in the car with me trying to shoot the bull or explain the car to me. I don't need to hear them tell me about acceleration, braking, payload, or mpg. I can tell if I like it or not after about 5 minutes of solo driving. If they are cool with your terms it's cool to leave, no need to waste your time or theirs for that matter.
