Looking at this for next year as a family hauler/wife vehicle. We've looked at them in person and while we like the exterior the interior and features are a little dated. Hard to justify spending 90k plus on a vehicle that doesn't come with CarPlay. I've seen internet rumors of a refresh at some point in the future but was interested to see if anyone has any better information. We'd probably be shopping later in the year when 2021 and 2022 models are on lots. Any chance 2022 is going to be a design change?
Really hard to say. Information seems to be all over the place on next gen LC / LX. Best source tends to be mud (https://forum.ih8mud.com/forums/200-series-cruisers.136/). They used to have a 300 series rumor thread, but it appears to have been taken down. The topic still comes up pretty frequently, though.
This guy on YouTube focuses on Japanese / Korean autos and posts any time there are new LC / LX rumors circulating.
There are some 3rd party workarounds for carplay. Beat-Sonic is most notable. Seems to work pretty well, but certainly not better than a native system. Frustrating they won't just update the software for infotainment. Toyota just doesn't care. These dinosaurs keep selling and the margins must be fat. GX is the same way on the infotainment front.
Why not buy CPO? They've basically not made any changes since 2016 and they're designed to last forever, so no sense in paying for upfront depreciation hit. I've wanted one for a while and have been tracking prices for a couple years now. COVID has definitely caused a jump in used prices, unfortunately.
I haven't ruled out used yet but like buying new because we generally keep our vehicles for a while and I like knowing we put all the miles on the car. Though, at this price range and long term reliability something CPO could be in play. I guess that way I could also turn around and trade up easier in a few years when the new model comes out without taking the new depreciation hit twice.
I posted a little about this on the Landcruiser thread last night, but essentially, I had drinks with my neighbor who works for Toyota corporate. He told me that the LX will be getting an update in '22 and the LC is indeed going to be leaving the US. He was reading from an email he received yesterday with a list of all cars getting an update/refresh in '22 so I didn't stop him for details on the LX, but will try and and get some more information when I see him again - this usually isn't too hard as he loves talking cars.
That would be really cool. As someone pointed out on LC thread, particularly interested to get his thoughts on future direction of LX. Continue to be based on Land Cruiser (body on frame, off roader) or will it be a standalone model that is more focused on being a luxury SUV.
