2016 F150 SuperCrew Lariat FX4 with the 5.0 V8 with 65,000 miles. Live in the greater Houston area.

Recently I've experienced extended crank (starter run?) time. Usually the truck will start in less than a second when I push the starter. On occasion it's taking several seconds to start. After it starts it seems to stumble for a second then runs fine.

The longer crank time to occur after the truck has been parked for a period of time (overnight, 8 hours at work) and during cooler weather. But not necessarily every time the truck has been sitting. Sometime it will go for a day or two without acting up. Truck starts right up after being parked for short periods of time (weekend trips to Lowes/Home Depot/etc)

Truck has been services according to Ford specs (I negotiated a service contract when purchased). Last major service at 60K (including plugs). Oil changes done every 5K. Air filter changed recently. Battery replaced (Advance Auto AutoCraft Platinum AGM) 3 months ago. Doesn't seem to matter if the gas tank is full or not.

Where should I start? Fuel issue? Electronic?
Will a scanner tell me anything?

Thx SW86

Did the problem start shortly after you replaced the battery?

No - It was doing it before I replaced the battery. Not as bad/frequent, but it was to an extent. Original battery was 4 years old, tested about 60%. Decided to replace before it died.

I had a long crank issue in my F150 where eventually the truck wouldn't start... turns out it was a 20 amp fuse (yellow) that was failing and eventually burned out. It controlled the fuel injection. Try checking those, not sure the exact position within the fuse box but that fixed my issue. Worth checking I'd say, my mechanic did not figure it out.

Other recent thread possibly is related ...

Could be weak fuel line prime/evap issue. Cycle key on and off a few times before starting, this will signal your fuel pump to spool up and prime the line. If all all is good after you cycle a fews times, then you have a weak prime or a leakdown issue somewhere to get sorted.

One of the guys that works for me has the same issue on a 2015. When this occurs the brake pedal feels like it has no pressure and you can press it all the way in. When the truck starts up fine there is pressure on the pedal and you can barely move it. He has been dealing with the issue for a while and has gotten no help from the dealer in fixing it as it's not throwing up any codes.

You could have a bad check valve or a leaking injector thats bleeding pressure down overnight or after it sits.

Do you hear the pump prime when you open the door?

I don't think i hear the pump prime when the door opens. Will pay closer attention going forward to see if I can hear anything.

With the push to start - i assume pushing the start button without depressing the brake pedal will cause the electric system to wake / turn on fuel pump?

If an injector is bad/leaking, how could you tell which one it is?

Thx - I'll get out the manual over the weekend and pull/replace the fuse

This could be a fuel related issue.

Sock filter plugged.
Fuel pump worn out
Fuel pump driver (assuming returnless) module not working on start

Usually Ford programs PTS vehicles to prime the pump. youll hear it very faintly , like a quiet hissing.

My 2018 F150s without PTS both did it.

If not, I can turn the feature on for you.

As far as injector leaking, it would take some advanced diagnostics to see which one if it is an injector.

Did you ever figure out the issue? I have the same issue on a 2017 model f150.

I have this issue on an old Dodge half ton that is out feed truck and you just have to turn the engine over once and then start it again and it cranks up. Best pickup I've ever owned. It will sit for months at a time when the grass is green and crank right up each fall.

I had a similar issue twice today on my Tundra.

When I got back home from running errands I turned off the truck and let it sit a few minutes. Then started it right up.

Checked the air filter to start with. It was filthy. Took the car to NAPA and got a new air filter and installed it. Truck started fine tonight when I went to shop for groceries.

Hopefully that solved my issue. Don't what's going on with these Fords.

Sorry missed the posts.

Never figured out the cause. Truck seems to run well for a while ( no start issues) then it starts acting up again. No repeatable.

I did get my check engine light to come on - code P1450. Fuel tank unable to bleed up fuel tank vacuum.
Reset check engine light and it hasn't occurred again.

Don't know if the two are related
