Howdy, AB... Eldest son is turning 16 soon. Currently, we have 5 vehicles bundled with home on State Farm. Guessing rates will jump when he receives his official license.

One of the vehicles will be his driver. Does it make sense (and is it permitted) to carry a separate policy on that particular vehicle listing him as driver? ...Keeping him off our main policy. Would that be the most cost effective route? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your input, ags.

Why would getting a separate policy with no multi policy discount be cheaper?

There's no way around paying out the ass for a 16 year old driver, particularly if male.

I would shop insurance as a whole package. From my experience State Farm is ridiculously expensive. Likely can get a better rate inclusive of your son than what you pay now without him.

Do what my dad did - bought a 10+ year old cheap (<$5k) car, put liability on it, and make him get a job to cover the $100 per month increase to your insurance premium

It would be a bad idea to break him off separately. You will get a little bit of favor by having everything bundled, him included, but no matter what route you go, it's going to cost you. He has no history, no discounts built in, and is 16, a new policy for him would probably be double just putting him on your policy where you have discounts and longevity benefits and bundles etc built into it.

Ahhhh...thanks a ton gang. Looks like shopping & keeping together / bundle seems the best route. Thanks again, ags.

Bonus, let him know how much his insurance will go up if he has a wreck. I drove like a grandma because I knew I could barely afford the insurance cost with an unblemished record.

You could always have him emancipate himself form his parents and then just not have insurance. The uninsured people that have hit me never faced any consequences for their actions, and they don't have anything you get in a suit. Bonus, he'll be poor enough to get serious financial aid and free lunch at school!
