Hey everyone,

Just picked up my second FJ80. I've always wanted to rebuild one to OEM or better quality to use as a daily driver and adventure vehicle. My first 80s series had rust and almost 300k miles so I wanted a lower mileage and rust free one to start with. I sold the first one and found this one 2 weeks ago.

This was a car that was not for sale, I was buying a burger from a food truck and I overheard the owner of the truck talking to another customer about an 80s series he was picking up tomorrow. He was buying it from his mom and brother. It is a 1995 (center locker only), clean title, single owner, 80k miles, dealer maintained every 5k miles according to the Carfax and didn't have a spot of rust because it had spent its life in El Paso. The negatives were that the paint and Interior were faded from sitting outside. It was not off roaded and used as a commuter. I didn't intend to buy a car that week but I couldn't resist and offered him double what he got it from his family on the spot. It wasn't for sale but he said he would get back to me if he changed his mind. a week later I got this beautiful cruiser for under 10k.

(Will post photos soon, but for now I also have a build thread on IH8MUD)

I've made a basic outline for the build. I included the part numbers and a running budget. The total budget for returning to OEM is 10-20k. After that I think could spend a lot more on accessories easily but I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

Any feedback about "while you are in there" projects that should be completed are appreciated.

Have fun - you'll get lots of help on Mud.

Sold my 80 a couple years ago now - have a 100 which is better suited to my usage but really enjoyed the 80. It will last longer than you will.

A little behind but just finished the engine portion of the rebuild. It's running really smooth and no leaks or weird noises. Next up is stripping the interior and rebuilding axels, brakes, and new suspension.

Making a big push right now to have it mostly done by August.

Getting the interior ready. Inside is stripped out and secondskin sound deadening put in. Running some wires for a potential future speaker upgrade.

The headliner and all plastic/vinyl panels are at an upholstery shop getting detailed and re-dyed to an oem color.

Seat cushions are being replaced with OEM and new Landcruiser heaven leather being put on. Also putting in the LCH seat heater kit and new leather for the armrests/console.

Dash is being sent off to "just dashes" in Arizona to have the old foam/vinyl removed and replaced.

New carpet kit (stock interior ultra plush pile with mass backing) being installed by the same upholstery shop.

Doing some misc things like installing stainless wits end hardware kits.

Also placed some orders:
- all new seals everywhere (windshield, doors, windows, back door/glass, fixed glass, sunroof, etc).
- new exterior trim including gutters (sourced from local dealer to avoid 400 dollar fright shipping), new 24K package gold emblems (PITA to source and I think I'm the only one who likes them). Misc parts like battery holder and all of the clips I broke.
- OME 2" suspension system with steering dampener. BFG KO tires x 5

Plan for the next few months:
June- finish interior
July- taking time painter on June 29, hoping they finish by Aug 20.
August- driving this to Colorado
Sept- power steering pump/axels
Oct- brake system overhaul, caliper rebuild, sell E92 M3 and make this my new daily.

I found a good paint shop about 45 min outside of town after going to about 5 shops. The paint will cost almost as much as the car but will be a good quality job. They are taking off all of the trim, doors, hold, glass and willl replace all of the seals with the new ones I just ordered. They are also painting the hubcaps and OEM bumpers. I want to keep it red but a little different from stock. Right now I'm going between a few options but am open to suggestions. Tesla signature red, Mercedes firemist red, Porsche arena red, Land Rover burgundy.

LR Version would be striking on a landcrusher.

Porsche color is also pretty gorgeous.

The shop is finishing out primer and sanding Windows are all out. Painting and reassembling on Monday/Tuesday. Right now I'm trying to choose between two different versions of Porsche arena red and a slightly darker version of the oem color. After this it's a half day in the tint shop, half day getting suspension, tires, and alignment, then finally one week at the interior shop for reassembly. Hope to have it done by the end of August/early sept.

Voodoo Blue would be unique as well

Where did you get the Secondskin mat? Did it come as a kit or just buy it by the sq. ft.? Also, where did you source your carpet?

I'm a few months behind you, but starting a similar project. I'll be interested in how you like your paint shop when they're done. I'll also be asking you for you list of seals and exterior trim when I get closer to paint.

Secondskin had a Black Friday sale with about 25% off I believe. 120 sq feet was plenty for the floor, wheel wells, and front doors.

I got the ultra plush mass backed carpet from stock interiors and I'm happy with the quality but will hold a final judgement until it's installed.

This is my last parts order that included all of the seals and external trim (except the gutters sourced though a dealer). The trim parts and seals (including fixed windows, windshield, and sunroof) were about 2k from Norwalk Toyota.

Just got it back from paint and very happy with the results. After the paint cures or a few weeks it'll go back for a final buff and wax. They repainted the trim pieces, bumpers, and hubcaps as well. Next up is getting the interior in, 2" OME lift with 33 tires, and harrup locking diffs.

I'm keeping the old side steps off and installing slew sliders. Also ordered a gobi roof rack (apparently won't be shipped until nov/dec).
