Ok to put a new tire - different brand - on car?

I replaced all 4 tires less than 3 months ago and now I have a screw in my shoulder/sidewall.
They are Yokohama YK740 GTX 235/40 R19 (96V) purchased from Discount Tire, no insurance of course.
They have about 2000 miles on them.

I have in my possession a "brand new" Pirelli Cinturato P7 in the same size.. it has 50 miles on it.

Is it OK to put that Pirelli on with my 3 other Yokos?

I'm also wondering if Discount would "exchange" the Pirelli for a Yoko... maybe knock 50% off the Yoko.

What say you Auto board?

Buy 1 matching tire.

Perhaps consider insurance.

I'd say yes if the other tire isn't too old (mfg date stamp 0115 = week 01 of 2015, for example, and they are both the same size and similarly rated tires of the same basic type. I.e all highway tires or all AT tires.

I can always tell if people are serious about their cars.

First thing I look for is if all tires match. If they don't then it means that the owner took shortcuts.

Serious in what manner? I think it is a little vanity to insist on a cosmetic item such as matching tires, at least for an older vehicle. You never know when you'll get an irreparable damage on a still good set of tires that the manufacturer has changed or discontinued. It's a cosmetic matter unless you select a replacement tire that is very different or inadequate, in my view. There are a lot of us who couldn't care less about the appearance of a car but are very invested in its proper operation and maintenance.

I could see how it might be seen as an indicator of lack of care, but I'd argue that is presumptive.

Exactly Mouth. I was going to respond but no need... if one wants to "judge" people based on transportation/black rubber, then so be it.

I just want to make sure it is safe and the mismatch doesn't cause accelerated wear/tear on the Pirelli or the Yokos.

And as far as the Insurance... nahh I'll pass on that. Who wins in the long run, Discount Tire or you?

I've been driving practically every day for the past 38 years, never purchased tire insurance and never needed it until this one time. I'll probably go another 38 years without needing it again. On second thought, hopefully I won't be driving in my 90's.

Insurance on this set of Yokos would have been $130. Let's say I replace my tires every 4 years on average, that's 10 x $130 = $1300 I would have spent on tire insurance... I'll have to blowout 4-5 more tires before I break even.

Maybe my math is bad.

Over the long run, they make a lot of money on their "certificates."

Yep. If I'm buying a 10-year old car and it has 4 different tire models I'm running not walking.

The difference in cost between a 'cosmetic replacement' and a 'functional equivalent' is minimal, especially in this case. People that consistently take short cuts do so in every aspect of maintenance.

There are a sub-cult of people that micro-manage every detail. I once bought a boat from an electrical engineer who worked for an aviation facility (Continental at the time). Every light bulb worked even though it was a 13 year old boat. Once you understand the personality, you learn to screen for it, and profit from it. I still own the boat, 11 years later, and every single light bulb works due to my AR nature.

Well if you bought it, you'd be driving.

Buy a new tire. Consider that the insurance you would have paid for on the 4.

Outside of Michelin tires all other tires are more or less the same in my opinion.

I do all the maintenance on my vehicles and wouldn't hesitate to put a different brand tire on a vehicle as long as it's the same size. Heck when I do replace tires I do it one at a time to make sure I don't get one that isn't round or out of balance.

hang on. if you need 4 new tires you make 4 separate trips to buy them one at a time...just to make sure one isn't messed up?

Some tires have stiffer sidewalls than others. Not sure how that would affect your ride, but something to consider.

Yep I'm still trying to decipher it.

I figured I'd catch crap for that. When I see a good deal on tires I need I buy them and keep them in the shed until I need them. I drive a lot of pasture miles so I never know when I may poke a hole in the sidewall and have to replace it.

When and if I have to replace a tire or patch a tire it's only a trip back to the house.

Check your spare. It might be the same as the other 3, or maybe closer. If so, put the spare on the good rim and put your oddball on the spare rim.

I was poor a looooooong time.

I haven't seen what the car is yet. Some (many) AWD cars are very sensitive to mismatched tire sizes. It wears out the diffs if the tires are different sizes.

No two tire brands come out to be the same size even if they say they are. There are differences in construction that make one tire bigger or smaller than another brand.
