Started my 2016 Tahoe up this morning and the radio/GPS/control screen went blank. After a few seconds, what you see in the image below popped up and won't go off. The radio still works through the controls on the steering wheel, but nothing on the console works. No reverse camera, WiFi, or Bluetooth connection, either. I went behind the glove box and "jiggled the blue wire" on the HMI module, as instructed in several places online. Nothing. Disconnected the battery for 10 minutes. Nothing.

I'm not too keen on taking it to the dealership to have the thing repaired, but I guess I will if I have to. Before I do that, I figured I'd ask if anyone here has any bright ideas.

"Waiting for update media" makes me feel like Samir from 'Office Space'.
Why does it say update media when there is no update media?!

I've got a Nakamichi CD45Z i might be willing to part with for the right price if you're looking to upgrade.

After some serious consideration...I'm going to have to pass.

In all seriousness it looks like the kind of thing they'll need to hook up to whatever diagnostic tools or computer they have at the dealership, and that something will need to be replaced, reflashed, or both. Definitely not a fan of modern touchscreens and whatnot in cars for that reason

Have you tried the model specific message boards?

Back when I had my BMW M3 with navigation, there were forums with all kinds of ways to hack/replace/upgrade those systems. There is probably something similar for your vehicle.

Worse comes to worse, Alpine makes a direct replacement for the infotainment systems in the 2015-2019 GM trucks. Might have one for the Tahoe/Yukons as well.

EDIT:

Here it is for the trucks

Second edit:

Looks like Jeg's sells factory refurbished units for the SUV's!

My company truck (2017 Silverado) just started doing the exact same thing yesterday. Since it's a fleet vehicle I'll let you know what they say as I won't have to pony up for the dealer service.

I've read to unhook the battery for several minutes to let the system reset and there's also a video on YouTube about a wiring cluster behind the glove box.

Appreciate y'all's responses.

Let me know what they tell you, Ninja Trucker. From what I've read online since posting this, if the quick fix behind the glove box doesn't work and disconnecting the battery doesn't work, then the HMI module either needs to be manually updated at the dealership (if you're lucky) or it needs to be replaced for something like $1200 (unlucky). I waiting on the dealership near me to have a loaner available, so it'll be a while before I know whether I'm lucky or not.

Looks like I'm in the "unlucky, so you get to pay $1200 to have the fried HMI module replaced" group. Good times. Good times.
