Interesting take on some of the technology within a Tesla.

Sandy Munro tears apart cars and other machines for a living, deducing how they're engineered and built, then sells extensive reports on the teardowns to suppliers, competitors and hopefuls. (The Tesla Model 3 Benchmark Report, for instance, runs more than 2,000 pages and costs $87,000.) He and his band of engineers, lean experts, cost analysts, statisticians and more have analyzed hundreds of electric vehicles since the late 1980s.

I continue to think Tesla should just license it's technology to other automakers and remain a pioneer R&D type company.

I doubt car makers would spend money on cutting edge innovation when none really did in earnest in the past. Unless a competitor does there's no need to.

Why should they when they can sell $50k half tons all day?

Start with UMichAg's article above....Tesla is open source.

I found this freakonomics podcast with Ford's CEO pretty interesting.

Still, the gist of the article the OP posted is that they have really good power and control systems, but they're **** at actually building the vehicle.

How does saying "yeah, no" actually contribute anything.

If they were licensing or selling motors and motor controllers other car makers would be able to make the rest of the vehicle much better than Tesla. They invested so much time and energy into the drive components, its like they just assumed that making the rest of the chassis was the easy part and its currently eating their lunch.

They've certainly struggled at times but by owner feedback are making very solid cars now. Mine is an July 2018 build and with the exception of an occasional slight rattle that has been hard to pin down, it has been problem free through 21,000 miles.

There is a reason that Model 3 owners rate their cars higher than any others, with second place being Porsche 911 owners.

I was one of those kids who took stuff apart all the time. Wish I had known there was a career in it.

21,000 miles with no problems is not impressive.

Based on my experience with Model 3 owners, they rate their cars higher than any others because they refuse to hear, believe, or accept that there is any possible alternative to their car, be it performance, efficiency, reliability, economic, or any other litany of subjects.

Yep. They are very similar to iphone users who believe that there is no equal to the latest and greatest iphone model.

I%92m a lowly Tundra driver (do have an iPhone) but I do know they make the fastest production sedan, much more efficient than IC, not many parts to break (but software can break) and although expensive to buy up front the total cost of ownership isn%92t bad.
