Any thoughts? Drove both of them as rentals over the past year. Considering one of them when my Tahoe finally wears out.

4Runner will be infinitely more reliable. GC has infinitely more bells and whistles.

I've owned both. A 2016 4Runner for 2 years and now a 2012 GC for about 6 months

They both are great, but this GC with the V8 is much more enjoyable to drive

5 years from now the JGC will be worth $7k
the 4 Runner $17k+

4Runner has more room in the back if that matters.

GC has all the bells and whistles.

Man I wish the GC was more reliable - love the looks and power train options.

I have a GC and havent had any problems. Do the people claiming reliability issues own one? I bought a year old "certified preowned" with 14,000 miles for about $12k less than what the original owner likely paid. Best deal on suv I could find under $30k.

The last two months that we had our 14 JGC, it prob spent 5 weeks in the shop with major electrical issues. Make sure it's under some sort of warrranty. They are fun to drive though.

Bought a new JGC in 2014. 5 years and 70k miles later, no issues.

Buys a car with known horrible resale value and then brags about how he got it for so much less than the new price.

Exactly. The market knows there are reliability issues. That's why it was so cheap!

2011 v6 with 140K + on it, been in the shop a few times.
1. TIPM fuel relay that was fixed under recall
2. Leak in the transmission cooler.
3. Bad coil pack @ 130K

I don't know how that compares concerning reliability. My wife still loves to drive it and all the bells and whistles still work.

Hasn't the forerunner been traditionally underpowered? Other than that, I like them. The Jeep would probably be more fun with the v8.

Toyotas are reliable as hell and retain their resale value. I bought a Tacoma about ten years ago and when I sold it there was a group of people bidding on it like an auction. This was from a for sale sign on the vehicle in my driveway. It had 70K miles and had never been in the shop once. I sold it for about 8k less than I bought it for.

I think it just depends on your view of underpowered.

Can you race off a light and change lanes to catch an exit in under a quarter mile? Probably not the best choice with 4Runner.

Will you get run down by 18wheelers on a highway?
Nah it can chug along at 80 with everyone else.

I really wanted the GC to work for us, but there wasn't enough room inside for what we wanted. And I was shopping 4-5 y/o cars.

I've owned both a GC V8 4x4 and a 4Runner V8 4wd. I no longer have the GC (lasted 135k miles). I still have the 4Runner with 192k miles and a lot less troubles. HTH

My wife drives a 2011 4Runner and underpowered would be how I describe it as I drive an F150. The third row option and resale values are what sold us on the 4Runner. Plan to sell it next summer to get an Expedition and expect pleasant results.

I wanted a Taco for years and bought a 2011 in 2014 before my second kid was born. Sold it 6 months later to TDA when I realized the back seat was too small for a giant car seat and made $3K on it.

That's great. They are one of the highest resale value vehicles out there, and for good reason. QUALITY.

I wish I had a Tacoma just to have on the side. Don't have anywhere to park it though.

I have a 2006 4runner that just hit 200k. Very reliable car with almost no issues. Will get a Taco when or if this 4runner bites the dust.

I drove a 2013 GC inline 6 for 13 years and put about 140K on it. Went a couple of years replacing window actuators, then had a couple of years where the cooling system had issues (several thermostats and a cracked radiator). I'd say the last 7 years I had it I averaged about 700 a year in extra maintenance.

Otherwise it was a tank. I jokingly brag that I kept a Chrysler running for 13 years without much extra maintenance.

My wife and I have had four 4Runners between us over the last 20 years. She loves the darn things and knock on wood they have been rock solid. She has a 2012 Limited right now that has about 160K miles. We keep thinking they will come out with a refresh and holding out for a new one. They certainly don't have the bells and whistles and I think they are slow as heck, but man are they darn near bullet proof.
