Tried to power my passenger window up this evening after leaving it down all day. Heard a crunch sound. Then it stopped, went down. Tried again, barely went up. Tried third time, didn't go up at all. Now completely open and broken.

Since this is a 2012, I don't think it's covered under the warranty. Is this something I would want fixed at the dealer or could I just as well go to a reputable independent shop?

Regulator has failed from the cable inside getting a memory and jumping off the pulleys.

Easy DIY if you're handy.

I don't have experience or tools getting panel off. So I take it this is something that any shop could take care of.

I got a quote of $1300 to replace the power window regulator. I was not thinking they would ask this much.

I'll do it for half of that price.

Looks like the dealership can likely do it for a lot less. Hell maybe at this point I'll do it myself. I just watched a youtube video, so now I'm an expert.

Yep, that's about as difficult as it is. And all the more reason not to use a stealership service department unless it is warranty work, which I would still question.

so I brought the car home.

Any advice on getting an OEM regulator vs. an after-market regulator?

For example, I could get a Dorman for about $175.

Is the stuff on ebay that claims to be OEM but is much cheaper than the dealership for the part, is it legit?

I watched a video recently for a regulator swap in a BMW using the cheap eBay option and it didn't fit very well, and seemed to tax the motor/move slower.

I'd go look for an enthusiast forum and see what folks are using.

Go buy the tools and DIY. It's an easy fix and $1300 is really bad. I had the same issue. Initially I took it to a shop. They wanted $700 forget that. The regulator only cost me $99. Easily replaced it myself.
Get ready bal. You're gonna in for a problem.

Should I also replace the motor? I get the impression most are changing just the regulator. The motor would add significant expense.

I did not replace the motor as it was not needed.

Couple of ordering options:

Amazon is a bit more expensive:

How hard is it to replace the actuator? I can live with a power lock that doesn't work. But I figure it would be nice to fix this at the same time. I haven't found a good video on how to fix it.

Can't be that hard.

Dig through some forum posts. I'm sure you'll find a write up of someone replacing it.

Here's a Tuscon video... similar? maybe..

Good news is that I successfully replaced the window regulator. Wasn't that hard. I did break several of the trim fasteners, so I'm going to have to buy extra of those. I didn't mess with the door lock. It would really help if I had garage space to do all of this, given that I can't shut the door w/o the door panel firmly attached.

This dumb car also has a water leak problem in the trunk (very common with this model). I have a significant amount of water in my taillights. So I need to remove them and dry them out and seal off my trunk. But again, hard to do with no garage. Too much junk in my garage. Time to clean it out. Kind of wishing it was summertime.
